Big difference between "not ever upgrading" and delaying an upgrade. I didn't start using XP at home until this year. Didn't have a need to upgrade when Windows 2000 worked perfectly. It was only when software I wanted to use was incompatible with Win2K that I switched. It will happen sooner with Vista than XP but within a year is unlikely at best.

I've used Vista for a few months now and I'm a true convert. Win XP for me is almost un-useable now.

OMG, I've never read a more boring web site in my life... I think I'm going to bed now. Lord knows I am now sleepy enough. :-)

I'll upgrade when either I get a new computer (unlikely within the next couple of years) or I have to because software support / new products cease for XP. Remains to be seen how long that might take.

Another option is to buy a Mac.

I've never had one, but I hear they're better for Photoshop-type applications. Which is becoming more important to me due to my interest in photography. And if you really want a Microsoft operating system you can set your Mac up to dual boot.

This is something I'll actually consider for my next laptop.

I don't have anything against Microsoft. In fact, besides being a geologist, I've taken the time to learn and work with Microsoft products enough to pass a bunch of exams and also am an MCSE. I just like to keep my options open.

If you buy a computer with Vista on it, fine. Should not be any issues that updating via MS won't solve.

If you have an older computer then here are the concerns...
-some of your hardware may need new drivers, and that's up to the makers of that hardware (printers, scanners, etc). Some may not upgrade - I got caught this way with my scanner when XP came out.
-upgrading an OS over an older OS is sometimes risky business - so IMO, buy a new C drive and install it fresh on that, your old C can now be your D drive and all your stuff is still there. Installing it over the old OS will still leave you with a fragmented HD, and the driver and software issues - and IMO may create real nightmares for some applications.
