Somewhere I learned a process that I can't remember how to do now...here's how I thought it went.

Starting with a new image
Duplicate Layer, set the layer type to Multiply...whole image goes dark
While on the new layer, switch my foreground color to white, select paintbrush and set Mode to Normal. This, I thought, would allow me to undo the multiply effect wherever I used the paintbrush. In contrast, if I changed the foreground color to black, changed the paintbrush mode Multiply, it would darken wherever I used the paintbrush? I know I'm missing some step here, but must be having a brainfart.

it sounds to me like your missing the layer mask.. have your multiply layer selected then at the bottom of your layers theres 7 buttons, the third one looks like a square with a circle in it.. push that one and you will get a white box in that layer next to the full image.. select that white box then do your black/white brush...

Yeah, I think koriley got it right. Painting on the layer mask, black will take away the effect and white will add it back.
