Bringing back the cam yourself is no probs, I'm just wondering if anyone buying over the Net has been stuck with import duty at all, and if so, how much?
quote]
I am importing a used D60 into the country this week. I'll let you know how I go with duty. As far as buying from overseas though, watch out, because many warranties are not international, and you will be high and dry if you get a dud.
The sony F717 just came down in price here is Oz, and the Olympus 5050 will too with that 5060 coming out.

To follow up on that last bit about bringing a cam into Australia...
I will not be charged duty DUTY but I have been hit with GST!!
GST on the value which the sender specified when sending, and GST on the cost of the shipping as well
(full 10.00%) |

May I ask what the total value of the package was (ie value+shipping) before GST?
Edit: I've just gone and searched the Customs website (was like running a maze blindfolded), and found that Digital Cameras do not attract import duties. However, GST is payable on almost everything, unless the amount payable is less than $50.
So, looks like if I import for under A$500 in total, I wont pay anything - but under A$500 wont get me much. I suppose GST on sub A$1000 is acceptable, as long as I factor it in when calculating costs.

The Olympus E20p. Used to be 1,500 (pounds) but is now around 745, which is what I got mine for. Jessops in UK will price match too, so you have the security of buying from a big chain and also can take it away the day you buy it ;)
Battery life is the best thing, yesterday I shot 260 images in 2hours, all with flash then looked at each one, then passed to several other people whom also looked at each one via lcd screen and batteries still going strong. I was very surprised to say the least. (standard nimh rechargeable)
Great camera for the sub 1000 price.

I'd love it, but that's sub 1000 pounds - I'm talking sub 1000 Australian Dollars, which is about 400 pounds

Just a little note about Jessops price-match.
They will only price-match match from another website if it is a UK based company, and only if the item is in stock. If the other company is out of stock, Jessops will not match the price.

Upon further investigation of camera prices available from Australian stores, it seems that the Fujifilm S602Z seems to have come down in price over the last week or two, where it was previously over $1100 everywhere - three Oz stores are pricing at just under $900, with the cheapest being $879.
This brings it into top spot on my list - I would like the Sony F717, but it's around $1200.
Looking at the pictures on this site taken with the camera, it looks very successful (15 blue ribbons, 8 reds, 9 yellows).
Anyone have any feedback on the S602Z? Suggestions, criticisms, experiences, etc?

If it's anywhere near the same price I'd recommend a good look at the newer Fujis though. The 602 is a great camera, but the new ones have the new CCD, bigger zoom ...
There were/are a LOT of 602 users here, many of whom have moved on to the 10D - that explains some of the quantity of ribbons.

The Fuji S7000 is much more expensive, and the S5000 is around the same price, but I prefer the S602 to the S5000, looking at the specs.
The ribbons I counted were all taken on the S602, even if the user had later moved on to better cameras. Eg, bod's excellent Toasty was taken with the S602 - bod has since moved on the the 10D, which was used to take his most recent ribbon, In Touch.
But yes, there are a lot of S602 users - beaten only by the G2 and the 10D.

Do make sure they are an official dealer of whatever brand you are buying. It can be a condition on the manufacturers warranty, and they will stick to it.
By the way, my camera arrived, and they waived the duty, and GST was only applicable where the item is < 12 months old |

Not a chance. They have no competition with it. NONE!
If your skill level justifies it, you should STRONGLY consider buying a used Canon D30 or D60. |
What a wanker, what does âskill levelâ and the D30 or D60 have to do with each other? I assume that d2frette means that the D30 and D60 âboth fine cameras in my viewâ require the gifted hands of a skilled photographer to get the best out of them? Well I would agree however I would say the same about heaps of cameras out there. I donât see any reason to place these cameras in a class of their own when it comes to skill levels. Lets face it there are tones of cameras out there that offer creative shooting modes and that is where the skill is. Most high-end Nikon coolpix cameras have far more user options than the D30 or D60. What extra skill do you need to have to shoot with a D30 or D60 compared to a Nikon 5700, Sony F717 or Minolta 7hi? Fitting the lens? Or maybe its manual focusing?
Sorry but you really sound like what Nikon F90, N90 owners used to sound like back in 35mm days.

The Olympus C750...I had the C700 an earlier model. Good pics but I took it back. I hated the viewfinder, electronic. If the light was at all low you couldn's see anything. I got the Olympus 4040 but now they have the 5050 with 5 megapixels. |

I missed your question before.
Actually I have imported several things.. normally the customs have been nothing or about $30, but the freight company usually handle it and I never hear anything of it.
I once got stung for $365 from customs directly, because I had to prove it was legal in my state, and legal to buy, and legal to import, but you won;t have them problems with a camera :)

Jeff - the 602Z is a great camera and will be a big improvement on your current Fuji. I especially like the macro - down to 1cm!
Battery life is excellent with rechargebles. It has the same problems as a lot of digicams with autofocus in low light and i find the manual focus not too good. The zoom range is up to 210mm on an equivalent 35mm camera. However the digital zoom is to be avoided but i suspect digital zoom is to be avoided in general! I have had my 602z since March this year and paid nearly £500. Becuase the 602z has been replaced with the s7000 you should be able to pick a 602z up a lot cheaper now.
Good luck
Mike

I see that you want to stay under $900. Costco has the Canon Rebel EOS for $950. Then you can go to the Canon website and get a $100 rebate bringing it $850! |

If you're going to spend up to $900, sounds like you should consider Digistoune's 300D package and then you'd have an SLR.

Panasonic has an image problem as far as being perceived as a serious digicam maker, largely because their corporate image is associated with comsumer electronics; and they are relatively new to the game. However Sony came from the same background and has become accepted by many. Panasonic will be a player. |
