Say for example you were starting out in setting up a sort of home studio thing, mainly for photographing still lifes or abstract macro shots of objects, rather than people.
What sort of things might you want in your setup?
Basically I'm after the sort of things that could be purchased as Christmas gifts, so nothing ludicrously expensive, but still useful to have.
Assume that the photographer has a dSLR and a standard flashgun, but not much else. |

Backdrops. Something to hang them on. A light tent. Some plexiglass. A table. Perhaps a light meter? |

You could do something fun.
Or if you have a baby close by...

Some monolight strobes would be nice to have. A table with backdrop support and/or a light tent. Flash meter. Macro lens Paper backdrops, a variety of fabrics, perhaps.
CF cards would make good stocking stuffers :-)

A baby prop might be fun but probably a pain to maintain and is apt to need frequent replacing. |

Or to do it the cheap way--a set or two of halogen worklights from Home Depot.
If your AC power is limited to one 15A circuit, a set of fluorescent worklights (or floodlights) may be better, but you have to be careful about using all the same sort of lights and doing a white balance.

Like, things that sell for less than 500 units of local currency. |

They're a lot more fun to make than to maintain. |

I have no experience with the Cameron stuff, but at the beginning of the year, I bought an Opus 2x100W lightkit from Henrys that turned out ultimately to be a piece of crap. Though the price was right, the kit was full of clearly used equipment. As an example, the power cords (which are permanently fixed to these Opus strobes) had old sticker goop on them, as though someone had removed the power warning labels, the gels were dented and scratched, and the light bodies had seen better days. If you can't look at the contents of the kit before you buy, I'd avoid it. |

Saw the thread and was thinking of Christmas ideas. I'm gonna ask Santa for a stack of +1 cards so that I can use one every challenge to take my photos from 4.5's to 5.5's ;)
