I know I use external HDs for my photo storage and if some of you do too, I had this deal emailed to me today from ResellerRatings Hot Deals Instant Alert

Staples has the Desk Hammer Express 320GB 7200RPM USB 2.0 External Hard Drive on sale for $99.98 shipped after $40 mail-in rebate, which is the lowest total price we know to currently be available.

Btw, I have acted on some of these deals with no problems at all. I got my latest ext HD and a 2G flash drive through these deal alerts.

The other option is to buy a hard drive (example - I bought 4 of these recently for a RAID box and they are fast and quite) and then get an enclosure (example - This specific one has a bit of future proofing but they come cheaper).

I am need of a good case. Mind you, I have never put a HD into one, so I need the Dummy version :) - and it has to have USB connectivity.
I have an Iomega 400GB external, but the power button broke loose and went who-knows-where and now the thing won't run unless I bend the power cord in a certain way. The drive should still be good and I hate to waste 400GB, so I want to try putting it into a new enclosure.

Does anyone know anything about this brand? Is it a reliable drive?

Thanks,

Rick

I frequent Tech Bargains and they post many many deals on external hard drives from more reputable brands. Maybe you can check there as well. They also post deals on enclosures for those of you looking to house the hard drives.

An external HD is definitely on my Christmas list this year. I looked at my hard drives the other day and realized since I have been shooting in raw my GBs have vanished. I'm quickly approaching 250GB which is my limit, but these things are becoming so cheap it's sort of a no brainer. But I would go for a reputable brand since you're not just storing crap on the drive. Photos are a terrible thing to lose...I learned that the hard way. Probably my favorite photo I've ever taken got lost in a hard drive crash.
