I got the dreaded error 99 during an air show. Sent it back to Canon and they determined the shutter was bad. They replaced it under warranty and its been ok ever since. Of course i dont use that camera nearly as much as i use the 5D Mk II. I would guesstimate i had about 3000 shots on the camera when it happened.

I had the same thing happen to me on my old school original Rebel in the middle of a party I was shooting. I switched from my 18-55 to my 70-300 and it seemed to be fine. I noticed it was extremely humid that night and think that had something to do with it. The camera was almost 6 years old so I deemed it to be a good excuse to upgrade. Boy am I glad I did. I still have the old Rebel on standby, waiting to possibly give it a good cleaning and see if it was the lens or the camera.

My 40D did the same. I tried everything looked at even more. Just to discover the MIRROR BOX failed. And that after less than 12,000 actuations. The techi confirmed what the internet said, it was a big 40D problem. So, Benhur.... time to pay up I suppose, Canon (South Africa) could not care less. If, by then I did not invest as much in Canon lenses, I would have been a anything but a Canonite.

I think oily lens contacts are responsible for this error.
To fix this you have to follow this simple procedure
# Turn off the camera.
# Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
# Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
# Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
# Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
