I really wanted to enter one of these in the science challenge, but I couldn't make up my mind which one, my wife was sick, the baby was crying so I didn't have time to take a perfect shot. Could I still get some feedback on a couple of these photos please? This would have been my first entry so I'm a bit upset at myself.
The title would have been something "Knowledge is power"

I think I prefer spark2 - it follows the rule of thirds better and focuses more on the spark. Spark5 is a bit overexposed on the right edge and that draws your eye away from the spark itself.
It's a shame you missed the deadline to submit - better luck next time. Often people submit a photo earlier in the challenge just so they don't miss out - you can always replace your submission right up until the deadline. |

I did that and Then I kept working on the rest of the pictures. I thought I will have time until midnight, my midnight. So about two hours before the midnight I decide what I really want to submit. Then I went for a glass of juice because I knew I will be here a long time. When I returned and I tried to send, I saw the message "This is your submission". I think I missed it with two minutes or so. And I took about 1000 pictures to get that shot. I was so upset... Specially because is my first challenge. The picture I have posted is not totally on the subject. They will tear me to pieces. Or even worse, they won't vote or comment at all. I wish I did not send before making sure that what I post is a keeper. |

The morning of the deadline I came up with my photo concept. I was going to attempt a photo of a falling apple with motion blur to play on the idea of Newton's discovery of gravity. In the evening, I got the apple, set up the shot, turned on the camera and cursed it when it shut itself off because the batteries needed recharged. DOH!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh well. Missed the challenge.

WhidbeyPix, I really like your idea but I think you would score better here with more depth of field in your picture.
To everyone who missed the deadline, please don't be discouraged. come back with another entry a little earlier for the next challenge. |

Thanks to everyone for your replies and feedback. I will work on getting more DOF, and I think I know how to do it. Just in case you wonder how I took the photo (See, the Concord camera I use has no optical zoom or macro ability at all). I used a lens from my Canon AE-1 held (not hand held of course) in front of the camera backwards.
There is one more trick I didn't have time for to increase DOF, and that is I made a small cap that goes over the camera lens and it has a pinhole in it. That basically forces it to have a very small apperture and it does give me a LOT more DOF, although there is vigneting, in this case it doesn't matter since the subject is so small and close to the lens, it all gets cropped anyway, and the dark areas make it look even better. Oh, and I like the spark02 one too except I didn't like that the tip of the spark plug wasn't in focus like in spark05.
I'm really enjoying these challenges, they're such a great way to learn the basics of photography.
Thanks again. |
