I bought an IR filter (Puleme ) a while back and have been using it regularly. However I'm not able to get the same sort of clarity as most others I've seen. Those pure whites and things I know can be introduced in post processing, but the images I get are generally in shades of dark purple and I can't process much out of them. I don't have a sample with me at the moment as I'm at work... but if anyone could help with suggestions about how I might get around this, please do. (By the way, I do have a custom white balance setting for IR, made from a shot of grass).

Make sure to set it up a couple of f-stops. Also, when you're editing, swap the red and blue channels.

some cameras are just less sensitive than others.
My previous camera, a Fuji couldn't not make any worthy IR photos at all. I was using the Hoya R72 filter. The Nikon I recently acquired, on the other hand, takes IR shots perfectly well with the same filter.

What number rating is the filter? I have an IR76 which produces a red image, but the IR92 produces a purple image.
CryingDragon's link will be helpful - I'm no expert at processing by a long way.

For colour ir photos with the d50 the hoya r72 is best.
If you do a custom white balance blues sky should come out brown.
Like these straight from the camera.

If your not getting this then it must be the type of filter you have.
Check out my ir gallery.

This is what I get... unless someone can help... it looks like I'm in the market for a new IR filter. The one I have is blocks all light below 850.

Yes the filter you have is too strong for colour ir, it won`t let through enough visable light. Your exposure times will be longer with that filter as well. I would say try different white balance settings but if there is no visable light getting through it won`t help.

Shalrath,
Before ordering a new filter try setting the custom white balance using just a white piece of paper stuck in front of the lense. I have the Hoya and that works every time with the D50. If that doesnt work then perhaps your filter is slightly to strong.
Good LucK

yeah... if you want the type of photos that ir king marbo posted, 850 is just too strong.

however, i'd keep that one around because, for me, it has a lovely effect... i quite like it...

i'm just the lowly court jester of IR (marbo asked me to be his queen, but i'm married and don't roll that way...), but here's my IR gallery for more examples...

;)

Yes i would keep hold of your purple filter to, it`s still good for b/w ir.

That is what you would expect to get. No need for a different filter.

For example you could change this...

Into this....

Just by setting the grey point and swapping the blue and red channels. Different settings will produce dramatically different results.

A little bit of levels
Swapped red and blue channels.
