I'm not sure I'd call it wise. That's more like a basic survival instinct :-)

I would say that my favorite F-stop is 2.8, because if you're shooting at 2.8 is generally means that you have a decent lens. It also provides plenty of light and a pleasing DOF -landscapes remain sharp due to distance, and macros get a nice tight DOF. F 2.8 can handle most lighting situations- low light at a reasonable shutter speed, and outdoor shooting with a fast shutter speed.
