As we all know the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM is very good and popular lens. It's been on the market since 2002. Anyways I'm just wondering if anybody knows or hears anything about an IS version of the EF 24-70. Thanks in advance for all the info..... |

I have a couple of lenses with IS on them. One of them is the EF-S 17-85 IS lens and I gotta tell ya, on a lens that short, the IS really doesn't make a lot of difference. You can typically hand-hold a lens at 1/focal length shutter speeds. So we're talking down to 1/17th of a second on the wide end. And if you're really steady you can go even slower than that.
The 24-70 is already $1100. They'd probably have to charge $1500 if they put IS on it and it wouldn't really be all that much better.
Now, IS on the 70-200 2.8 lens ... that's a completely different story, especially at the 200mm end.

Plus the lens weighs an absolute ton as it is. If they made it any heavier putting a motor in there my arms would break.
I agree w/dwterry also on the lens being too short in focal length for me to care about having IS on it. I'm glad I have it on the 100-400 but don't miss it on this lens. |

I didn't think I'd want a short/wide lens with IS either...then I tried the 17-55.
i can handlhold at 55mm a 1/4 second (quarter second) and get a sharp pic. I regret not trying the wide end to see how slow I can go!
Of course at 1/4 second ANY subject movement will be a blurry mess, I mean, an artistic interpretation or the scene. LOL
