I had a quick hands on with the new Canon G7 and have found a new love.
The magnesium beast is packed with features, but also access to them.
You all probably know the specs by now so I wont bore you.
If you want them they are at the bottom of this report.

Cool stuff!
Great large screen. Seems detailed enough, and I am used to the excellent monitor on my Panasonic LX1.

Excellent fast operation, snappier than my LX1.
Excellent macro and focus, close as 1 cm! Very fast and reliable.
Handy ISO dial on top left of camera up to 1600(hopefully its good).
My favourite is the thumb wheel from the Canon S80(main competitor to the LX1) is very responsive and a dream to use.
Very well built with a matt black anodised finish.
Has a unique focus feature that allows you to place the focus spot anywhere on the frame which would be ideal for tripod use, or even helpful for the rule of thirds(just place the focus point on the most ideal portion).
Large zoom at 6x (image stabilised as well).
Wide angle adapters available.

So far this is on my end of summer shopping list. My much loved FZ20 might have to find a new home.

I got mine this past Friday...only thing I didn't like was it came with a neck strap and not a wrist...I had to take one off my old camera...it's perfect now.

All you need is a way to hack the firmware so you get RAW!

(And didn't they also ditch the swivel LCD?

They lost my money!

I have not seen any camera firmware hacks since the Canon EOS300.
Also those hacks tend to unlock features implemented but locked away by the manufacturer for marketing reasons, they do not implement new functionality not already present as that would require allot of reverse engineering and programming in low level code. I presume anyway.

The camera is slimmer without the screen but I DO miss it, yet will still buy this. For you the Canon 640 may be ideal but you will loose handling as the 640 has no thumb wheel.

Its funny, I would feel insecure holding such a mass by a wrist strap. Although, It can be a life(of camera saver) of course. I was shooting some macro in the botanical gardens in Ho Chi Mihn (don't go without antidepressants as it is also a horrible zoo), a big spider managed to climb onto my camera hand and by reflex I flung my hand wildly. My ex-girlfriend was in hysterics. Camera saved by the strap.

The screen as is is easily visable when turned all different directions...I think it is great just as it is and really wouldn't want it to be fatter.

I heard the battery life sucks. Any comment on that?

Unfortunately not just yet. The s3is has brilliant battery life. But then my FZ20 is rated at 280 cipa. Yet I often fill the card 400+ images.
