Today while shooting my D70 started rather suddently to act up. The shutter seemed to not go down (or complete or whatever you call that), and a message would be on the little viewer on top, "ERR". When I turned the camera off and then on again, the shutter would clunk shut and everything was OK. Then it would happen again. Happened about 8 times in a row, but now it's not happening.

I called Nikon, they tell me I need to send it in for diagnostics. I would prefer to not send it in if possible and first figure out if it's something to worry about or not.

Has anyone had a similar thing happen? What was it? What was the solution? Thanks in advance!

roughly how many shots have you taken with that camera during its lifetime?? It could be the shutter mechanism is on its way out..

Many, many. I don't know how many, but I've had it since May 2004, and have used it a lot.

Are shutter mechanism fixable?

yup, had the same problem on my 300d shortly before I got my 5D.. Cost me around £150 to get fixed, but that included a full service, calibration and sensor clean. Not sure about Nikon prices but I daresay it will be around the same kinda price.... have you ever had the camera serviced at all?? Might just need a tweak here and a twitch there..

bad timing ... if you were closer i'd lend you my d100
good luck with nikon Mississauga, i figure the only way i got my camera quick is because i was calling & harrassing them every couple days

My D70 had a similar problem over a year ago - mine is an 04 model as well. I would recommend a call to Nikon and check with them on a potential recall for this problem. As I recall (sorry for the pun!) mine was a similar issue and they resolved it free of charge.

Wow whoever is up against you in WPL week 1 is sure catching a break if you have to send you cam in for service. Although with your talent you could borrow the kid next doors 1mp Camera phone and ribbon.

MattO

Good luck getting it fixed.

Ursula this is a link from nikonusa.com, try the 2 button reset and see what happens. Also clean the contacts on the lens as well as the ones in the camera.

Best of luck!

I don't have a backup. I'm hoping for a D200. The camera is still working, and I'm not sending it off until I either absolutely have to or have a backup. Don't worry.

Thank you! I knew these threads were around, but I couldn't find them (quickly, so I opted for the easy way out, and asked again).

I tried the reset. It's working now. I hope it keeps working for a while.

I just realized this afternoon how terribly attached I am to that camera. When it stopped working, I just about sat down and cried right there in the middle of the woods. Oh well.

As I said, it is working now, and I'm going to watch it for a bit, and see if it happens again. If it does, and it needs fixing, so be it. I have been wishing for a D200 (but it's expensive, and the D70 has been very good for me), so we'll see.

Thank you all again for the input, it's much appreciated.
