Bought my usual paper and read the lead article with some interest
//www.independent.co.uk/
//news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/article1940786.ece
It goes on to discuss some of the negative campaign tactics and stories bing bandied around by the Republicans.
This isn't so much a post about who's side I hope come out on top, but more that I don't understand whats going on.
For example, the story about a chap called Dr. Kagen, who was accused by the republican party of Wisconsin of having links to a murderer and child rapist. It turned out that Dr. Kagen's only link to this criminal was that a lawyer he had once used for some legal work had also done some legal work on this murderers case.
The article also mentions quite a few quite appauling false accusations and mis-truths. So, my question is, how many Americans actually believe all this tripe that is being peddled to grab votes.
Also, can people like Dr. Kagen sue the republicans for this kind of thing? IMO this accusation goes beyond acceptable, and can only imagine how upset my family and I would be if lies like this were spread about me.

The political ads are ridiculously out of control here. The Republican gubernatorial candidate in Colorado is actually under Federal investigation for using classified information from an FBI database in one of his mudslinging ads against the Democratic candidate. The Paccione/Musgrave race comes off like a desperate catfight. Although the "fighting granny" ad was so funny that a friend visiting from another state took the mail flyer home as a souvenir. I've been sick of the whole thing for quite awhile.

candidate bashing is way out of hand and goes both ways in all the states. I hate it and turn off the volume on the tv when it comes on.

So would I be right is saying that this 'anything goes' campaigning is frowned upon in the US.
The last election in the UK, the Tories (UK equivilent of the Republicans) were accused of negative campaigning instead of actually laying out their policies.
Many suggested that the British public didn't like the negative campaigning and would rather have seen policies than mudslinging, and this cost the Tories a lot of votes.
How many people in the US actually like to see people that are going to be in power acting like this? IF they are happy to lie now, they are sure as hell gonna lie to stay in power once they get there. How can you trust them? I just don't get it! |

I really don't understand it either. It seems to be only a choice between bad and worse.
This is how I see it, and I could be totally wrong.
People get into politics with wonderful intentions of making changes that would benifit everyone. But once they get into it, they learn the ONLY way to get ahead, to get to the point where they can make a difference, is learn to 'play the game' which corrupts their views. By the time they GET to the point where they CAN make a difference. Their hands are tied by the 'to many cooks in the kitchen' effect. Their struggle to get and keep the votes outweights the importance of getting the job done.
It's like high school where everyone wants to be miss/mr. Popular!

I live in Colorado, but am 'lucky' enough to be in a New Mexico TV Market- go figure. So we never get to see Colorado Ads. I am so sick of Heather Wilson and Patricia Madrid ads, I wish they'd both just go away.
About two weeks ago the Wilson campaign started running the 'fear' ads. They go like this... "A terroist places a call to Denver, a plot is about to unfold and threaten millions. Patricia Madrid thinks we should wait for the courts to act before we do anything......" They are the worst ads I have ever seen.
Madrid on the other runs this little sound bites and they are the second worst ads I have ever seen.

We have (had) a candidate in Florida that did a fine job of bashing himself. Mark Foley
I think my favorite, so far is the Tennesse race. Here's a funny link about that one.
Really, it's not funny at all; especially since it's so telling of our culture, in general.

Yeah, I read a little about that Mark Foley guy recently, and as you said, he managed to crucify himself without any outside help.
I am all for freedom of speech but surely when you are telling blatent lies about other candidates something should be done. Have there ever been any instances of people suing the ass out of the people creating these ads? |
