So its in they just named ST.L the most dangerous city in U.S. Its funny because we just talked about a GTG last week.
I say we photograph the Ghetto, anybody else want in on this.
Alright maybe not the ghetto, but there some cool stuff around STL, as long as we stay in a group, and carry mace, and go broke, and park the cars in Illinois. LMAO |

I haven't lived there in nearly 20 years...at that time East St. Louis was a place of turmoil and contributed heavily to the crime statistics. Is that still the case? St. Louis proper, i.e. downtown, wasn't too bad then. |

No, your absolutely right! ST.L proper is still in decent shape, problem is, 3 blocks in the wrong direction can have serious consequences.
E. STL is still pretty bad. |

That's funny. I lived just outside of Detroit (Ithaca or Utica - something like that) 25 years ago. Man time flies! Drove past the Silverdome every day on the way into work. Never did venture into downtown Detroit except for a couple of business trips.
Next, someone will mention LA (Hawthorne, Culver City, Van Nuys) - did that stint from '83 to '87. Although part of that period was in Century City (even that wasn't all calm as I was punched in the face by a shoplifter once - then I had to chase him down and tackle him - fun). :D |

I was in St. Louis at the Edward Jones Dome for marching band competitions the last two weekends. I felt safe at the arch and walking to/from the dome. However, this past Saturday one band member's parents car got stolen, along with 2 trumpets and 2 uniforms. (The dad is a state trooper, so things will not go well if the perp gets caught!) Glad I didn't see the report on STL until this morning! |

So, what's the criteria on this one?.
Not knocking it per se, but about every other month I see posts about somebody's city being the "most dangerous in the US". I guess each study gets their own, depending on the criteria (murders, assault, car theft, burglary, robbery, etc.) and then there is the per capita effect.
I think it was the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal or another major publication just about 2 or three months ago that had Dallas as the most dangerous (can't remember on what but I think it was violent crimes).

It's pretty much limited to Detroit - the suburbs are very much safe (Utica being one). Troy, Michigan is the fifth safest city in the US per this same report, and Troy is only a 20 minute drive from Detroit. Not that the reports mean that much. |

It was an FBI study, but the exact criteria I'm not sure about. The way they talked was like if you visited the city, and the likely hood of Rape, Murder, Theft, and Assault.

Actually, I'd much rather park IN St. Louis than in Illinois. E. St. Louis is on the Illinois side....and it IS scary. That's the only neighborhood I've ever driven through where I actually felt it necessary to lock my car doors.
That being said...I'm not that far from St. Louis and my hubby has family near there. So we're in the area relatively often if people do actually wanna do a GTG! |

While I'm all for an STL GTG I'd personally prefer not to shoot architecture stuff. Just not my thing. Whatever you all decide, if its something that interests me and it meets my schedule then count me in. I'll keep up with this thread.

No, I never really meant to shoot architecture. I just threw that out there because of the old churches, and the historic landing.
I'm not good at architecture anyway, but if thats whats decided on, I'm always game for learning.
actually suggestions at this point would be pretty cool.
May I:
St.L Zoo,
The Arch,
Grants Farm,
Gravois Windmill,
Sculpture park in West County (Watson),
The Landing,
St.L Botanical Gardens
Eads Bridge
MLK Bridge
Casino Queen
Busch Stadium
I'm up for just about anything guys, this is just what dawned on me at the moment. |

I like some of your ideas, someone take an idea and run with it and let see who all can show up, lets hope for some good weather as well. Do we try this fall still? Or wait until spring? I'm headed out of town this weekend to Branson. Keep me posted.

This fall is starting to get pretty hectic for me, personally. Lots of weekends already taken up by family comittments. But I'd be happy to do a get together when things calm down a bit after the holidays.
If it's before the holidays, I'll just have to hope that I can make it. But if we plan far enough in advance, I'll make sure to get it on my calendar.
For reference:
I LOVE the zoo! Zoo sounds good to me, Botanical gardens sound good to me. My favorite things to take pictures of...flowers and animals. I'm such a girl! :-)
Downtown scenes/candids/architecture would be ok with me too...as long as someone's willing to give me some pointers in that regard. |

Hey Matt that last one may be possible. I am wondering if we didn't give them a far enough in advance notice that we were coming, if they wouldn't go head and let us in.
We need a good talker in our group, Any Volunteers?
I'm thinking about maybe just telling them that we belong to the biggest DP club in the world, and the best photographers in the world are here as well. If we talk to the right people I bet its possible. STL loves to brag. |

The busch stadium gives tours with group discount rates.
My photo club went to the old busch before it was torn down. It was a real blast to get to set in the dugout. I think it costs us about 6.00 a person at that time. That might have been a 'special' price though depending on who wheeled the deal.
