My husband has mentioned a couple times how he would like a new electric razor as his is getting old. I was thinking about surprising him with one! I figured asking here where a bunch of men roam would be a good place to ask for suggestions. He mentioned that a self-cleaning one seemed pretty cool.
So, suggestions? It has to get a super close shave to meet military standards. His hair is pretty coarse. As for the self cleaning ones, I wonder if they are more of a pain in the but than a time saver.
Thanks :)

Do you know if he prefers the straight foils or floating disks?
I have sparse facial hair, but have used an electric for years -- By far the closest shave with one is while showering with a lotion. So if a close shave is top priority I would vote for a wet/dry.
The only other advice I can give is get name brand so you can find replacements heads when he needs them. My first electric was a Panasonic and I had to buy a different brand for no other reason than I could not find a replacement head when it became dull.
BTW: previous discussion <-- lot of good advice.

do your sailor one better and get him laser hair removal...that is if you can find it there in Guam. I hate the shaving everyday thing and if I could I would most likly get my neck and parts of my face done so I'd never have to shave it again (unfortunitly my wife wants me to be able to get a beard when I finally retire). I know a LT that did it and was very pleased.
Good luck on your search.

I prefer the Braun shavers if I have to use electric. I believe that they make a good wet/dry one, so it can be used in the shower.
Keep in mind that there is an adjustment period where his beard area may be irritated by the electric shaver and the teeny tiny hair particles it creates.
I've been using a disposable blade razor for the past few years and I have come to prefer it greatly.

I use a blade so I couldn't really recommend anything electric! Takes me 10 minutes in the shower to do my whole head! :)

Thanks for the responses so far :) He uses his electric a lot more often now that he is on a ship. Seems impractical to have a self-cleaning one on a ship when you only have so much space to yourself! |

I use a Philishave with three discs and a moving head. It can be cleaned under water and has a loy of adjustments for a smoothe shave. I shave my face AND my head and I have a really tough beard and it does a great job. The cheaper ones just dont have the adjustments and features, the higher end ones really work well.
I used a blade for 22 years, and it took about three months for my face to acclimatise. Most people give up before their face adjusts and go back to a razor, but it's worth sticking to it as it is cheaper and more convenient and best of all NO CUTS!

I don't have a self-cleaning electric, but the best way I have found to clean mine is to use liquid hand soap. Start it up and get the head wet, add a little bit of liquid soap and turn on for a few seconds (or a minute or two). Rinse the soap off and it's good to go. Quick, easy and uses something (liquid soap) that is likely already available. Note that this works for all razors I've owned, even the dry-only can be cleaned as long as not immersed. The cleaning instructions should say what can and can't be rinsed.
