I use a LITE-ON burner with an external enclosure. I would recommend LITE-ON drives, mine works great and has for the past 3 years.

I had an earlier Sony (DRU510A +/- 4x drive) die after about 2 years and definitely not excessive use. My replacement was an LG. Probably just a random failure though. You might want to stay clear of Memorex discs or at least try one before getting a bunch - my Sony didn't like them at all for some reason.

DON'T BUY SONY!
Buy Lite-on or Pioneer... Sony computer equipment has a nasty habbit of being garbage. |

LaCie makes great USB hard drives, interesting that their burners would have a bad reputation.
Lite-On is a good brand, so is NEC. Plextor has a really good reputation for their burners, probably one of the best but kind of expensive most of the time.

I forgot to mention that I am running a Mac, so that sort of limits my choices I believe.
EDIT: I also have heard good things about the Lacie HD's, so I wonder if I should stick with Lacie...

Buy a Plextor, if you don't want to get a Plextor, get a Plextor anyway.

The problem with Sony is that there is little in the way of support.
My current computer came with a Sony DVD re-writer, and it died after about 9 months (stopped writing DVDs). It was replaced under guarantee (on the computer) but that was not very reasurring considering I hardly used to burn any DVDs at all.
If I were to buy one "off the shelf" I'd consider a Plextor, Pioneer or an LG. |

I bought a sony over a year ago dvd/dl, I average 5 burns at 4 gigs or better a day sometimes more and its still going strog...... burning.
A few months after I bought it the tray stoped opening completly and you have to actually eject and then pull it open. The support sucks, and good luck with an RMA. I have an emprex I have been running for a few years with the same burn load, no complaints. I bought it at Frys, cheep. The sony is a great burner, it just has issues. |

I've got a Sony DRU something or another, about a year ago and have had no issues. It was a bit more money than the others available but would burn more types of disks, even dual layer (haven't tried that yet) and was the one all hte mags recomend as the most compatible with other drives, as in disks burned on teh sony were more widely readable.
