what are the differences between using just the hotshoe and/or sync port on the camera? Does the camera talks to the flash through the sync port?

No, a s sync port is just a dumb electrical terminal. A hot-shoe for TTL cameras relays information to the flash about focal length and exposure values. Sync ports are used for off-camera studio strobes.

so it's the same as the dumb-hotshoe port on the camera?
so lets say I've got a flash unit that's fixed on the dumb-hotshoe, I dont have to connect the flash to the sync port, is that correct?

Correct. Its typically one or the other, not both. Sync port is for studio strobes and is the "dumb" connector, the hot shoe is for flashes and since it also transmits exposure data would be considered "smart".
