As relative newbie (and a very inexperienced challenge contender!) I have what is probably a dumb question, but one I'd like to put out there.
When I see the term Landscape - I envision a typical scenic view of the countryside. However, as a urban dweller, the "landscape" I most frequently come across is more of a Citiscape. If I do a Cityscape as my interpretation of landscape am I going to get DNMC and low scores, or is it going to be viewed as an urban landscape and win a ribbon?
Any thoughts? I suppose it's not an exact science, but..... |

Well, generally a landscape, seascape, something natural will be what suits that description, and most DPC voters are VERY literal, so maybe if you could find a park setting. There are city situations that do include the land aspect of it, but I know what you mean.
Grab a subject and do a portrait. ;~D

Thanks - that's pretty much what I thought. Just thought I'd throw it out there for confirmation!

Landscape is not urban, hence "land". Cityscape is not rural, hence "city". The term Urban Landscape is not a photography term, but a political/cultural term. I live in the city too, so I just use it as a timely excuse to go for a little drive....

Right. I don't see it so cut and dry.
If it's buildings, city street, junk yard, rail yard, city park..all those fall under landscape in my mind. |

Thanks Justine
You see that's where I'm coming from. To me the landscape is the environment surrounding you. That could be a lot of things depending where you are situated.

Typing in define: landscape in Google has some intersting and pretty down to earth (sorry) definitions:
* An expanse of scenery that can be seen in a single view.
* Description of a format which is wider than it is deep.
* Artist style in which width is greater than height. (Portrait is opposite.)
* The view of an area.
* A work of art that represents a view of natural scenery.
* Areas of land that are distinguished by differences in landforms, vegetation, land use, and aesthetic characteristics.
Guess it's a free-for-all so long as the aspect ratio is wider than it is tall.

There's no question that this is true, in my mind. But it begs the issue of "how will it SCORE?" And historically, "cityscapes" don't do well in DPC landscape challenges. It is what it is...

5th in the original landscape challenge. Could be a different time and place though (ie. 2002 vs. 2006). I know I wouldn't really think of this as a "cityscape", but buildings are prominent.
1st in Landscape II. While I included land in the shot, you could call this a seascape as well. However, I would be hesitent to enter a shot with little to no land visible... |

Your pictures of Colordo don't suck. :-) And your portfolio is one I've visited more than once, but I don't know it with that username - who did you used to be? |

I was kind of dreading an image I was going to submit cause it had a person in part of it but they are not the main subject. I was afraid people would say that since it has a person it's a portrait. I ended up reshooting the entire shot to submit. |

I should have recognized it - I did recognize your real name. Always good to be a non-demoninational heathen, though. :-) |
