The loose description about bokeh is that it is the out of focus foreground and/or background (according to the challenge submission page). Does out of focus foreground count...? Most everyone is worrying about the background and donuts and circles etc. on other forum threads.

Also does the "out of focus" bit have to be created by the lense focus, or could it be as a result of external influences such as mist, smoke dusty road...?

Main Entry: bokeh
Part of Speech: noun
Definition: a Japanese term for the subjective aesthetic quality of out-of-focus areas of a photographic image
Example: The bokeh, or quality of the blurred image in the photograph, was described and discussed.

I'm assuming this means the out of focus areas caused by the lens

It always gets labeled as those circles, but from what I can tell, those are not really what Bokeh is about. It is more the coolness of the out of focus background.

It's the OOF highlights in the background or foreground.

I say it's the circles! :D But then, there are several definitions floating around, so pick your favorite version and go with it.

You got to get one with both interesting out of focus stuff and a few circles thrown in, and you'll have it made :)

Oh, I forgot, it's gotta have a subject too.

The description is best defined by what the voters think:
Bokeh II results
Bokeh I results

You are right, bokeh can be either foreground or background. The challenge description specifically says background so use your best judgement what you want to do. Oh, actually bokeh is the 'quality' of the out-of-focus part of the image.

On the technical side, bokeh is generally discussed in terms of the quality of yours lens' optics. That is where all the 'circles of confusion' and lens distortion talk comes from. But I don't think the Japanese had those things in mind when they invented the term. They just think of how 'pleasing' the out-of-focus parts are.

Don't see why not as long as it is out-of-focus.

not to open a can of worms, but for my money, that shot has some horrible bokeh... that big white splotch behind the mouse and up above the beak just kill the photo for me...

but, oh... it does have those silly little circles... i'll grant you that...

but the bokeh? bleck.

Agreed that is unpleasing BoKeh.

I am going by the previous winners. That is the only way to tell what voters think is bokeh.

It isn't very interesting by itself, but take a photograph whose subject is enhanced by the bokeh of the background.
