I work on a PC, but the editor of the mag I work for recently got a new MAC. I sent her a bunch of JPGs, and she put them on her PC. She then transferred them over to her new MAC. Now that she is done with the pics, she is trying to delete them. But she can't because she is being told they are "locked."

So how does she get rid of them? I am of no help to her because I'm not in the MAC world.... yet.

find the properties for them & unlock
applekey click or shift click or something like that ...

Usually that means that an application is still using the files. Have her quit all running applications and then try to delete them.

You do not mention if she is using OS 9 or OS X. She can select the file and got to File-->Get Info. In OS X there is a check box for "Locked". If it is checked, then uncheck it. OS 9 probably has the same feature.

Also, if she used the images in a desktop publishing program like Quark or InDesign, the files there may be pointing to the images. I am not sure if this would prevent them from being deleted.

Good luck, I hope this helps

Or Right click...Get Info (you can preselect all of them prior to this).
Preselect them all and then Apple-i (for info) unselect the Locked button.

hold down the Option key while selecting Empty Trash from the Finder menu. If that doesn't work open Terminal and type:

sudo rm -rf (space) then drag the offending file to the Terminal window and hit return.

you'll be prompted for an admin password.

Yea, about as amazing as me watching the 'Windows update' icon popping up every single time I boot up for the past two days.

I just got a new laptop, WinXP - So the first time I connect to the net it downloads and installs 49 updates. Since then it's installed a handful on every single reboot. In fact, the only productivity I've seen today is installing updates and rebooting.

Right now it's half-way through installing Office XP SP3 52.3Mb

Earlier on it was the .NET framework 2.0 security updates.

And before that it was the GDI detection tool and the 'normal' batch of Tuesday security releases. Oh, and of course, the update to the update tool itself. Who knows what treats it has in store for me on the next reboot.

Amazing.
