I have a quick question and i'm a little freaked..
i was out shooting today and it's pretty cold. i was out for about an hr or so and at first i could see thru the view finder perfectly. but when i went to go shoot the last few shots the view finder got really dark. and everytime i would press the shutter button it would read err99 or something like that. so i was wondering if it was because it's really cold out or if my cam is broken :( i hope not cuz i was just getting the hang of it..

if anyone know whati can do i would appreciate it.. thanks so much in advance..

oh by the way i have the rebel xt and i got it in august.

Sounds to me like the mirror may be stuck in the up position thus covering your view.

Is the depth of field preview button stuck in?
Did you turn the camera off, remove the lens, reinstall it and try again?
Just a couple thoughts. Cameras do act a bit wiggy in extreme cold.

How cold do you consider really cold? And how much power do you have in your batteries? Batteries don't last as long in the cold.

Hhhmm.... Did isn't something I have experience with or that I would even fix myself. If I was you, I'd take it to a a reputable repair shop and see what they say. Best of luck.

when i pressed the shutter button in my car i could see the picture on the screen but still not thru the view finder.. i had to have a long shutter speed thu so it was a little blurry because i was holding it.

i dont know degrees wise but my fingers were pretty numb. thats why i was heading in.. i just had to get that last shoot.. :( which i didnt get.

oh and it's a freshly charged battery.

okay, this is freaky i took the battery out and like took the lens off. and i guess that reset the mirror. because i can see now.. but the strange thing is, is that i did that in the car.. when it first happened.

u think this is something i should worry about.

Have you tried to go into the sensor cleaning mode and then cut off the camera to go back out of it and see if it will release the mirror.

I had a similar experience with the 10D, except that the mirror sort of half stuck in a diagonal patterm. It fell off its hinges.

I had it fixed by canon, they replaced the whole mirror box assembly.
Good as new now though.

Assuming you know what/where it is, press it in & out a few times quickly.
You can tell when it is working, by putting the camera in AV mode,
dialing up about f/11.0 and while looking through the viewfinder, press the DoF preview.
It should get considerably darker, and a lot will go in focus.

(no insult intended on the assuming you know part - many dSLR users never use it)

Actually I always wondered, but was always to embarrassed to ask, and too lazy to look it up. :)

Thanks.
