Sometimes, the worse the bokeh, the more pleasing it is to the eye.

Bokeh is pretty crazy isn't it!
Thanks Ursula for the advice on that. I will enter the best image on your recomendation, and now I have learned what Bokeh is right?! :)
As Sir Topum Hat would say "Jason, you have caused confusion and delay". - (I have young kids and all I get to watch is Thomas the Tank Engine.)

Personally, I will be voting on whether bokeh helps make the image better. If people are adding the limited depth of field just to meet the challenge, even though it does not enhance the photo I will vote accordingly.
I do not care about the lens quality of the bokeh. That is just nitpicking on people's personal equipment.
My ideal vote would be a picture that wouldn't work if it didn't have the limited depth (bokeh). If the picture could have been taken at f8 just as easily it is going to get a low score for me. At least that is how I plan to vote. Of course uniformity and context in the bokeh will be important too. |

I have a question about the bokeh-donuts.

Well, it seems like it's something people don't really like (I didn't know that, because I do like it, weird huh!) but my question is: what's causing the donut look? I thought I had a pretty good lens, but now it seems like I don't really? How can I make sure these donuts don't appear? |

from reading the first page on bokeh.. i'm confused on the whole circles thing... maybe i'm just reading it wrong. But is bokeh all about circles or is it something else?? I read the directions, and was a bit confused, mine does have circles in it, just in a totally different and have to find it way.. i guess I'm not real clear on what bokeh is maybe.. oh grr.. i'm confused now.. lol.. sorry if i've confused anyone else.. |

I can hardly believe after 1 week and 3 threads (and that is only for this current challenge) that the debate about bokeh is still going around and around!
bokeh = out of focus bits in a photographic image
"good" bokeh = when the viewer finds the out of focus bits in a photographic image pleasing...some like circles, some like smoothness, some like both
"Quality" of bokeh = ??? For an attempt at defining "Quality" (with a big Q) I direct you to Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Robert Pirsig. (...and yes, that's a Wikipedia link.)

I'm not even sure. Mirror lenses can cause such a bokeh, but I don't think that lens is one of those. I saw a number of reviews saying the bokeh is nice on the 28-70mm. You notice that not all the circles of confusion have the issue.

it's actually really simple, and all this talk of circles and donuts has just muddled the definition. bokeh is, quite literally, the aesthetic quality of out-of-focus areas of a photographic image, period.
if that includes circles, then so be it, but circles are most definitely not required. |

This article is pretty good at describing bokeh. If you scroll down, it addresses "doughnuts" and their cause.
