What lens are you using?
10/23/2006 03:00:04 PM · #3
Zoom in to the limit of your telephoto lens, get as close to the subject as you can focus, make sure your background is relatively far away and shoot with your aperture wide open.

The 'quality' of your bokeh is a determined by the optical quality of your glass. If that is the best your glass can do then there is nothing you can do about it. If using a zoom lens then try finding its 'sweet spot', that is the focal length the lens is optically optimized for and that should produce it's 'best' bokeh.

Work within the limitations of your equipment. You will see that many top finishers have few or no 'circles'. It is the way the bokeh is used in the image that will score well, not just having 'good' bokeh.

Hi, fixed lens on the E20, F2.4, zoomed in full. I was quite far away from the image though, about a meter away from my forground and another meter from my background with donuts. thanks

Ok. I read this forum and pulled my image and replaced with a diffrent one. I need some clarification. I have one image that has like 7000 circles in them. None real doughnuted, just circles. I have another one that has almost no circles, but a very nice "feel" to the background. I have a third image that kicks chicken, and has very shallow dof with no noticable circles. I looked through the past winners and saw that most of them did not have the circles like Steve had suggested.

Which one should I enter! I am so friggin confused. If I enter the one I like the best, I will get voted down for not having circles, and if I enter the one with 7000 circles it is considered "bad bokeh" and will be voted down. grr.

Good luck on that one... half here will say you need the cute little circles, the other half like a creamy subject enhancing background...

When you find a definition of bokeh that everyone is happy with let me know. j/k ;o)

Enter the one you like, unless of course you want to please the voters then enter the one that has bokeh as defined by the voters. ;oP

arrrgh is right

My blue ribbon from the last only had one circle and it wasn't even white (it was purple), so you can do well without them.

That being said, I'm trying to defend my placing and this time I've got little circles in spades. :)

Well I am giving it a go. Very little circles in this one, but a far better image than the others. We will just have to see how many 1's everybody dishes out.

Hey...my 5th from the last Bokeh didn't have circles either. But it did have a tweety bird..but my tweety bird flew away so I haven't even got that this time. And StDavidson went and drank all the Bok-hic water...so what's a girl gunna do now????

I probably should have entered this one. I didn't because I didn't think it was bokeh. I thought it needed 7000 little circles to be good. I ended up entering something that probably isn't as good as this. So here I come 5.5!

I agree. You should have entered this one. Looks like a Blue Ribbon winner from here.

Oh, wait...you didn't enter this one??? Then that would make this an "outtake". Yikes! Better hide it quick!!! Really, save it for later.

Thanks everyone. Have been playing outside today and not a donut in sight. Do you think I was getting donuts last night because I was inside with softboxes etc?
Boomtap, that is one coooooooooool image, I would be so chuffed with that.

Everyone is talking about good and bad bokeh in the background...but what about the bit about out-of-focus foreground (see submissions page definitions).
10/24/2006 10:18:34 AM · #21
You can only post your entry if you say that it wasnt taken with the bokeh challenge in mind, dont even mention the challenge when posting.

excuse my spelling, I have taken quite a lot of morphine.

You got me in such a panic, I removed the images. Now, what outtakes? Oh well I guess I will be ready for Bokeh IV.

Well, in all honesty, I reported your post (I've got thick skin and don't mind saying so), but once again there was rather ambiguous enforcement (no SC response) of this forum rule...so, I thought I would toss a post out there with a little bit of "tongue-in-cheek" sarcasm for good measure.

For the record 1) I liked your photo - nicely done. 2) I think SC does a great job overall, but forum rule #2 seems to be a tricky one for them.

I am so confused. Why am I saving that photo for later again?

Oh, I see you thought it was an outake and I needed to delete it so as not to violate rule #2... I get it now. I guess I probably should not have posted it. I actually put it up here before I realized that it fit the bokeh challenge (I don't really understand what it is), and then everybody said that it was bokeh, so I should have entered it, but I already posted it, so I have to go with a diffrent one that will probably only get a 5.5.

Story of my life.

(1) Yes, at this time we're not supposed to be showing outtakes (those are something like pictures we would have entered but didn't) before the challenge is ended and results are announced.

(2) Feel free to enter the image you took down to the Bokeh challenge, especially if it is your best image for the challenge. You took it down very quickly, you were not asking for input specifically for the challenge, few people will have seen the image.

Voters, if they recognize the image, should consider it like any other entry and vote impartially on it. You were not trying to get prior opinions on a challenge entry, nor were you aware of the outtake thing. Don't feel you have to keep out a good image because of this.
