I do not know much about 'LCD' monitors and contrast ratios. I'm hoping to be able to get one in the future (not soon). I was looking at some at b&h and came across this one. Could someone take a look at it and see what they think.
NEC with a contrast ratio of 1600:1 / 20" display.

Here is a recent thread on the topic.
'lcd' thread.
Dont be fooled by specs alone. What may be a good number for one type of panel may not be so good for another type of panel. There is an overview of 'LCD' technology I link to in the above thread also which may help. |

NEC is well known for making nice monitors for photography.
However, after a little bit of research it looks like this monitor uses the TN panel which offers pretty poor viewing angles (and is generally not liked for digital photography editing). I'm a big fan of the Samsung 244t (more money) as it's a great monitor.

I was actually surprised to see how many other manufacturers use samsung panels (ie nec, viewsonic, dell etc). I personally have a samsung 225BW and for the price I cant complain. Probably not the best choice if your a profession photog, but work well for me. |

Yeah, there aren't many manufacturer's of flat panels. The trick is to avoid the TN panels as they're not great for photography (but they're the cheapest so people usually buy them). S-'IPS' panels are the way to go if you can find one but PVA panels are a nice compromise. |
