I need one that is reliable, and not too pricey. And please, nothing from sandisk. I've had too many problems with their equipment to be able to trust them anymore.

This one !!!!!!!!!!
It is the fastest I have ever had, and has been working just fine for ages now. |

I bought this one recently and it's been working great. Nicely sits on the desktop without taking up much space, so it's always handy (my last one had to be under the desk with the computer)
It's fast as heck. No drivers needed either.

| There's only one reader that tops this one for speed, and it's a SanDisk. ;-) |

Just be sure it says not only USB 2.0 but that it also says the words "hi speed" above the USB logo. There are USB 2.0 readers out there that are "2.0 in name only". They are compatible with 2.0 but don't take advantage of the speed that 2.0 offers. The ones that say "hi speed" on them will move a gigabyte of data in about 4 minutes. The ones that don't say "hi speed" take about 25 minutes to move the same amount of data.

I have to agree with fordman and nshapiro..... I have that one too and it has been awesome for me. I have had it for 2 years now and never once had a problem with it.
Oh, and maybe get a spare USB cable too! ;)

i'd get a multi reader - they cost the same and you never know when a friend will be over and need to use it - or some other such scenario :)
no recommendations, though - mines built into my computer |

| I have the unit referenced by Scalvert. If you have FireWire, do look at this one. It does move data *fast*. |

I have a cheapo eFilm USB 2.0 and it has worked well for years now. Got it on eBay. I also have a multi-card reader from Dell that I never use.
If you are interested in that Sandisk 12 in 1, there are 2 auctions at eBay:

I find USB to be painfully slow so I went with a firewire CF reader from lexar.

I would love to use my firewire, but my external HD uses my only firewire port on my ibook. So in order to use it, I would have to unplug the HD, which would give me an extra step of saving, which could become a hassle in the long run.
My seagate does have 2 firewires, and I remember reading in the manual that the 2nd port on the HD was to be able to loop another HD to it when that time came, wonder if it would work as just using it as a port to use the firewire?

| My Lexar reader is daisy-chained through my LaCie external hdd. You should be able to do the same through your Seagate :-) |

| I use a $12 tigerdirect usb 2.0 reader for laptop and a $15 tigerdirect internal (3.5" bay) that you hook up to the motherboard's usb pins. no problems and cheap and fast enough for me. |
