I use iWeb on the Mac for my personal site. Integrates will with iPhoto. Mine is not great but I've seen some really good stuff.

There are also several Flash based templates out there for photo sites. Try a google search.
Good Luck!

click my sig links....
Best thing... learn to do it yourself. HTML is fairly simple to use. and lots of programs that almost create everything for you. I Used sothink HTML editer for years...
Now, im doing PHP and write everything in notepad. So go figure... But best and least expensive way is learning it.

$600 - $1200 isn't really a bad price for a full site design. I've charged more than that on most my clients, but they also had full flexability to update the site themselves through the browser.
If you do some research you can learn the tools to create your site, its not overlly complicated, just time consuming, like learning anything new.

If you can get a web site host that supports PHP and MySQL there are lots of gallery programs you can use that are quite customizable. The one that I use is called DAlbum. If you were looking for a simpler look and feel with less pictures (say between 10 - 30 of your very best) I would suggest using straight HTML. There is also a web site I know of called RentACoderwhere you can submit a project with price ranges and coders will bid on it. You can then give them a rough idea of what you want the site to look like and they can create it for a reasonable fee.
In my opinion I would at least design the style and look of the site myself before talking to someone else to make it. Good personal photography sites that I have seen seem to work well with the photographer's style. Poor ones have a sort of "canned" look to them.
I would show my personal site but the box it is residing on took a dirt nap and I haven't rebuilt it yet (I run my own web server). Fortunately I managed to get the pictures off of it before it cratered. |

If you want a good, free, WYSIWYG web editor, check out Nvu //www.nvu.com.
Web page design isn't totally complicated. Mostly, with today's tools, all you really need is the graphics design skils to make it look good, while working in the confines of the HTML language and CSS style sheets.

What slideshow do you use for your site? It is very similar to the ones I see on news sites for their photos.

You don't say what you're trying to do. Are you trying to sell photos? Is it a display piece to impress local clients you're already in contact with? Are you trying to reach as many potential customers through the web as possible? |

If you're showing private photos, you're probably wanting Password Protection, easy upload and all that stuff. I started using PrintRoom.com for event photography. It's very easy to upload to, the thumbnails, larger proofs, watermarking are all handled automatically.
I'd suggest having a simaple, but nice-looking public site and then using a provider like this on the side to handle the client side. Also, I'd recommend putting a good bit of WRITING on there so that you're got plenty for the Search Engines to find. |

this is what ill want for the future.. i think for now i think all i need to something for Just my work people to see and to know that i mean Business. I want something basic.... but you know enough to have the Ey poping effect to catch ya... i did see this one site ( i for get now) There pictures were thumb pics and in a line at the bottom of the screen and when you scrolled over them the popped up bigger. Then when when you got to the right of the line of thumbs the line would move left or right and move accordingly to wich side the cursor was on of the screen.. i really like this effect....

go to 50freemegs.com I have hosting right now just because I am too short on cash at the moment to pay for hosting(will get it soon). anyway..they have many options you can choose from and pre set templates that you just replace the sample with your own. I am a certified web developer..so I just wrote my own HTML. I just have this in place until I get my flash site in place. It is ad supported..but for next to nothing, you can have them removed.

My site isn't the world's fanciest thing, but it was through this site that my work was found by an ad agency... resulting in a photo of mine being used in a Chevy ad that appeared in Sports Illustrated, USA Today and in national TV spots. Soooo... it seems to be working out ok for me :)

That's nice! Care to share the CSS and customizations? (I have the power smugmug, which is at least partly customizable).

Thanks...
The private piece is just for looking, though purchasing could be added I guess. It is not a particularly secure way of doing it, it just routes to a randomly named HTML extension, which is coded, so it can not be viewed by "Viewing Source". I've not been able to crack it. Anyone who actually spent long enough trying to would have to have a really good reason to want to access a bunch of low res digital proofs too! |
