It's becoming more and more feasable that one day humans will inhabit the moon and Mars. More than likely, NASA will select who is to be the first people to start to colonize other plants, so I wonder how soon they would start recruiting photographers. It would seem they would need some good photogs on the planets, perhaps for PR, etc.

What do you think?

Can I get a lunar rover? I'll accept that and a place to sleep as payment.

you really think NASA will be leading the way on this? My money is on Richard Branson. Governments are spending way too much money on wars etc. (in my opinion) to give space travel the funding it needs. Branson's Virgin Galactic programme is going to make enormous amounts of revenue very fast, so I think they're going to be pushing the next era of space travel. And then there will be competitors who will improve the technology, push the price down, and one day we'll all have lunar rovers (I hope).

Virgin will need photographers to go in their first few missions into space to fill their tourism brochures...so I think that's the place to start looking for your cosmic employment...and what photographer would not relish the chance to take a snap of the Earth from space as a starting point?

You make good points and I agree. With that, a private organization would be more apt to hire photographers than a government agency, because quite frankly, businesses are better at PR. :-)

I would love to shoot in space. Lunar landscapes... cool.

I believe various tree-sitters have already claimed that feat. ;-)
