I've asked everyone I know what to do here and now they won't answer me. :-P
I am one of those people who hates "buyers regret". Coming in the next month or two I will be getting a new lens. My two main choices given what I already have are:
1)70-200mm f/2.8 VR
and
2)18-200mm f/3.5-f/5.6 VRII + Vertical Grip
[wildcard choice:]
3)Sigma 30mm f/1.4 + Vertical Grip + ?
the 70-200 is just plain amazing, and I'm leaning towards it... But, I also do a lot of traveling on the road, and the size might be limiting. The 18-200 is perfectly sized, but it lacks the pure awsomeness that the 70-200 can yield. While I'm almost settled on the 70-200, it's size would possibly limit me while the 18-200 would get more daily use.
The Sigma is just plain cool. I'll be getting it at some point in the next year or two anyways.
So please, fellow photographers, assist me in my agony and help me solve my obsessive buyers regret problem.

hmmm...
1)70-200mm f/2.8 VR
3)Nikon 35mm MF f/1.4 & Nikon two touch 70-200mmAF f2.8
2)18-200mm f/3.5-f/5.6 VRII
i chnaged your list slightly ;) but this would be my order (if i had the cash for #1)
forget the vertical grip - it just make your bag heavier ...

70-200 and never look back. Unless you don't want people to notice you and speculate about which continent it is you're taking pictures of every time you use it in public...
They'll probably all want to look through it and take a picture, too. |

Ditto on 70-200 F4L. You can't go wrong with that lens.

I think I'm going to stick with Nikon for now, but thanks for the suggestion. :-) |

Nikon 70-200 for sure! These lenses are insane. I've got a Canon variant and every time I take it out and shoot stuff with it, it makes me hate all the other lenses I use. I would imagine that the Nikon variant is equally capable of generating such sentiments.
The other lens I would suggest would be the Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 or something similar. The 18-200 is pretty good, but Kosmikkreeper posted some nice comparison shots and while it is easily better than the 18-70 for the 18-70 range, it definitely tapers off after about 100mm and by 130mm is already delivering performance that I would call pretty damned mediocre.
Sure the VR is kinda neat, but..... If you think that you won't be taking it around much and you want to have a single lens for that purpose, it might be an idea, but I think you can get better performance by specializing and just buying a decent compact bag to hold it all.
Do your research on the primes. Prime lens performance gets a bit finnicky as things get wider. Tough to find a lot of information on the subject. The Sigma 30mm is on my wish list too though.
Just a quick note that when I was doing research on preferred focal lengths by guys who do a lot of portrait work, I noticed that Dr Jones shoots the 17-55 and Librodo shoots the 60mm macro.
You have a nice selection of primes already too. |
