I just got my Mac Pro with os x Tiger. So far the set-up has been reasonably painless.
Two questions:
Q-1:I can't seem to save files onto my Maxtor external HD but I can read and extract files. Same problem with my ibook btw. How do I get the system's to sync up in both directions?
Q-2: When I save files to my Desktop, no icon appears on the Desktop though the files seem to be occupying Desktop space. I did reboot my computer one time during the set-up and they were visible upon the reboot but not before. How do I get them to show?
Thanks in advance.

Q1 - How is the Mactor formatted? Is is set as "Read Only". There is a disk utility in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder. It should help show you the settings for the drive.
Q2 - I've noticed at times the icons do not appear on the desktop until the Finder is the foremost screen. I think it refreshes when it is brougt to the front. Not sure on this one though. |

if you can read and extract files but not write then it's most likely formatted in NTFS, but if you format it in FAT32 then you can read/write on both mac and PC
the only problem is you can not save files bigger than 4GB, that is you can't save DVD image on a FAT32 drive. |

Bump
I'll look into the formatting. Any online tutorials regarding disk partitioning/formatting and external HD's?
Anyone else have any id-ers why no icons are showing on my desktop when I "save as" to the desktop? |

I'm waiting for my Mac Guru friend to get back online and will pose these questions to him. So far he's helped me out of just about anything I couldn't figure out on my own. Hopefully I can get back with you later this afternoon.

I don't know if this is the answer, but many Mac applications save files in the Documents folder by default, rather than on the desktop. I have accidentaly saved files in the Documents folder and then later couldn't find them because I thought they should be on the desktop. This is an easy mistake to make.
To see if this is happening, open a Finder window and click on the Documents icon on the left. Or got to Macintosh HD > Users > Your user name > Documents. Good luck!

Mystopia-Thank you. I anxiously await.
Philip-My ibook can save things to the desktop so I know it's possible with Tiger but I have no idea what preference setting would control that. |

It's not a preference, it's just a default setting that you can change simply by selecting a different destination the next time you save a file. Of course you can save files to your desktop, I'm just saying that you might want to look for any lost files in your Documents folder since many applications save them there by default until you choose a different location. I think you may have accidentally saved them there instead of to your desktop.

Let me clarify. I used "Save As" for a few files, to test where they went and selected Desktop for 5-6 jpeg conversions BUT no icon for the files showed up on the desktop. They were "there" because when I tried to resave the message said "this file already exists...do you want to replace it?" At some point, I turned off my computer and after I rebooted those files icons then appeared on the desktop. Before then, the icons DID show up on some menu tabs but not all of them.
I appreciate the help. I'll have a few more questions before this nights through so I'm hoping to spare the Apple Telephone Tech, a long Q&A. |

try being on your desktop when finder is active and press apple-j and make the settings arrange by kind.
it might be that your icons get hidden under some other icons. |

Ok .. my friend said this about the icons not showing ..
1. about the desktop one he might have messed up the resolution setting for the screen while setting up the machine
or
2. finder window and has it set to icon view and he needs to scroll down to where the files are or switch to list or column view
As far as the external drive he said he can't even guess what that problem would be without actually seeing it. I hooked mine up and transferred files to my Mac without a problem so I am clueless too.
I hope this little bit helps.
