Personally, I was very happy with this shot:

I felt it had a dramatic sky, the city skyline was pretty sharp, and I loved the colors. However, it didn't do nearly as well as I thought it would (not in overall position, always hard to place high in a free study, but in terms of raw score). The comments didn't help much.

Was wondering if anyone could give me any insight into what was "wrong" with this photo, or what could be improved to make it do better. cheers.

Couldn't tell you. I voted it a 6. I guess it didn't have "wow" factor for me to give it an 8,9 or 10. Nothing wrong with it as such.

I didn't vote on it, but I would have given it a 5.

You have some lens convergence due to the upward tilt of the camera. This was an advance editing challenge so you could have corrected for that.

There's no real focal point in the skyline and the sky is not all that dramatic, just cloudy. Some of the commenters disagree with me about the sky.

All of this is of course IMHO. I hope it helps.

I think it's on okay shot but yes, it doesn't have the 'wow' factor. I find that I don't exactly know what to look at. My eye wanders and wanders and never settles anywhere.

the composition seems weird to me. jsut way too much sky for my tastes. hope that helps. I didnt vote though. would have been a 5 I think.

Not that this kept your score way down or anything but there are some areas in the clouds that have odd coloration to them. I would have retouched the sky a little using the color replacement tool in photoshop or used a similar tool.

Here are my 2 eurocents:

I cannot tell you why other people didn't vote this a 7 or up, but I can tell you why I would give this shot a 6 (I didn't vote in the challenge). There's nothing wrong with it technically speaking, it's sharp, the colours are nice and the sky's dramatic. It certainly doesn't deserve a 5... now, altough there are interesting points and a lot to look at in the "city part" of the shot, it feels a bit too busy to me. The eye is distracted by the bright lights in the lower right corner and in the opposite left, and then by the variety of things arrayed along the riverside: the parking lot, the white building, the bridge... I think that if you had cropped out the left and right sides (after the white building and before the first left light after the bridge) or shot with a little more zoom just to get the cityscape and the sky, you would have a very nice picture, clearly in the 7-8 range (once again, imho).

Hope this helps

If you are happy with overall placement that is all the really matters. DPCers score images exceeptionally low despite heaping praise on the quality of pictures submitted here. They figure they have to vote like everyone else does and since everyone else votes low then they do to.

I see you fit that category. Perhaps if you decided to buck the trend and vote higher then perhaps others will do that to.

I would agree. your shot is 1.4 higher than what you feel is an avg score so i think you did well. I feel the avg photo here is a 5.3 and i am very happy with a 6.7. actually 6.3 is where i fell good. if i can do 1 point higher than what i vote then i am doing well.

It is good we do not all vote in the same way.
If I "Order by My vote" it looks like this:
1 (10) - 72 place
2 (9) - 11 place
3 (9) - 217 place
4 (9) - 409 place
5 (8) - 5 place
6 (8) - 8 place
7 (8) - 14 place
8 (8) - 24 place
9 (8) - 34 place
10 (8) - 47 place
Your picture got a 7 from me and so did 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
Your picture in my view is wery good and well done but I think there is no obvious subject. Nothing to hold your eyes within the frame. My eyes go straight to the sky, it is beautiful, then to the city where I try to find some subject but in stead I find a big white thing that disapoints not beeing a subject so I look again. So... overall a good picture but missing a subject!
My entry is similar in many ways but there are actually two subjects and that is not good either. There I have my city in the horizon and a wave in the front. Hope there is something in this text of mine that is helpful! :-)

What matters most is your perception of your art...if you really like what you have done and enjoyed yourself while doing it, that is more important than how you may have placed.

That being said, it is also important to ask questions on how to improve...

Still, what matters most is if you thoroughly enjoyed yourself and learned something new.

I like that photo.
I would have commented "nice shot" but I'd rather not be slapped for doing that, lol
