| Can you add a teleconverter to a Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM lens for more reach? |

| Yeah, but I'm pretty sure you'd lose autofocus. |

Sure....but realize a 2x converter will effectively make your lens a 140-600 f/8-11.2. I hope you have a LOT of light.
Added: I don't lose AF on my 70-200 2.8 when I use my 2X.

| Isn't there a 1.4 converter? Would that be better then? I'm trying to figure out how to get more reach (cheaply)& the 70-300 is the most reach that I currently have. |

I have a Quantaray 2X converter with a Sigma 70-300 Lens. I can take some sample photos if you like.

Sure! Thanks, Rex.
The two lenses that I have with any reach are the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 & the Canon 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM. Which do you think would be better? |

The Sigma, easily. You won't be able to get quite the same reach, but there is a full F-stop advantage. You'll be able to hand hold it in less light than you'd be able to with the 70-300 + teleconverter.

So, if I use the Sigma 70-200 with a 2X converter, would the 400mm reach be enough for taking pictures of birds, etc. Also, are the optics good with a 2x converter?

Ok here you go. I found a subject that wouldn't move.
The second ones focus is bad. Totally my fault. I had to put it in manual because it couldn't decide between focusing on the net or the words. Both are a little underexposed because I realized I had it set for -1
Hope this helps.

This was taken with a Canon 200mm f/2.8L
and a Canon 2x Teleconverter. I dont know if this converter works with the sigma you have, but the sharpness from my camera and lens combo is very impressive, i think. That was also at the largest aperture that i could get, 5.6.

It should be 'enough'. Optics would depend on what lens/converter combo you use. I have a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX DG with a Sigma 2x EX DG converter and any degrading in shots are negligable.

| Ok, thanks! So, with my Sigma, do you think the Sigma converter would be better to get? (Or a canon converter?) |

I also have the Sigma 70-200 and the Sigma 2x converter.
Image quality isn't too bad. Autofocus is a lot slower.
I've taken pictures of birds, too. I can fill the frame with a small bird if I'm within 10-15 feet. |

| I would buy the Sigma. It's cheaper than the Canon and optically designed for use with the Sigma 70-200mm. |

Check my results.
If you want telephoto, getting the right lens is always better then a teleconverter. Of course budget does not always accomidate that... With the 1.4 or 2x you will lose image quality.
Also note, with the 2x you will lose auto focus since the 20D will not auto focus at F8 or above. You can trick your camera and use a teleconverter that does not tell the camera it's on there, but even then auto focus will hunt a lot even in good light.
