Alright....so i have a new website built and I'm having some trouble with the domain name. I used to have www.calebkimbrough.com registered so it went to my smugmug....and now I'm trying to make it so it forwards to my new website.

But everytime I log into godaddy and change the "forward to" field it doesn't end up working, it just keeps sending me to my smugmug page.

Any help would be awwwweeesssoooome.

It's not an instant change. Depending on how godaddy is setup, it could take from ten minutes to a day or so for the changes to go live and then propagate around.

edit: here you can see godaddy's servers haven't updated yet

[ 2:53pm exs@krypha:~]> dig @ns3.secureserver.net www.calebkimbrough.com

;; ANSWER SECTION:
www.calebkimbrough.com. 1H IN CNAME www.smugmug.com.

Where did you find this data at? I actually started to try and change it about three days ago, unsuccesfully.

I'm not sure what the dns server and all those things are suppposed to be set as. I'm not hosting my site with godaddy....it's actually a .mac account through apple.

Does this affect anything?

Dig is a utility for querying nameservers.

Nameservers hold the information about your domain.

3 days is too long.

You have www.whatever.com pointing as a CNAME to www.smugmug.com. CNAME's require another name record to point at. If you are now pointing www.whatever.com at an ip address (123.123.123.123) rather than a name (something.something.something), you need to first delete the CNAME record, then create a new A record called www and point it at the new ip address.

You don't need to host your website where your domain is hosted. The two are not related.

edit: btw, when entered correctly it looks like 'the internet' should know where to find your new website within 1 hour from whenever godaddy's nameservers are updated.

You'll need to ask support at mac.com how you should set it up.

With GoDaddy, you can forward or mask a domain name.

Don't go into the MX records stuff, just click on the hyperlink under "forwarded to" (or whatever the text is).

You have a choice of forwarding or masking. either allow you to insert a URL or IP address. Your current website may or may not have a static IP address. If it dosen't, you should use the URL. If it does, you can use either URL or IP address.

Forwarding makes this info public, and it may take a day to get things propagated through the internet (that's my experience). The address bar in the user's browser will show the actual URL of your website.

Masking is immediate, and keeps your //www.calebkimbrough.com URL in the user's browser address bar.
