I heard in these forums that you can tie a d50 right into your laptop with the usb and get live output to your monitor. I cannot get this to work however and it is driving me nuts.

you can not see a live image from a NIKON DSLR
ever
you can see the image only after it has been taken..

Right, my bad I meant to say right after it has been taken. I want it on my big laptop screen rather than the tiny lcd on the camera.

ah ..
you have to use Nikon Capture or their new (more $$) Cmera control software ...

it will xfer & pop up the image after the shutter goes off

That is what I thought it would do, however I get no pop up of the image.

you started NikonCaptureControl ..
or from tools in NikonCapture started NikonCaptureControl ..
and in Download options button in Control there is a "When a new image is recieved from the camera: option ...
(camera has to be on & attached to run Control ... )

Thanks I will try this. I knew I was missing a step, but I am tired of farting around with software. I decided just to shoot the picture and work it out later.

There should be a utility named "Camera Window" on the software CD you get with the camera - or you can download it at canon.com

I'm only using a lowly Coolpix, but I have the same Nikon Capture transfer software. The way it works with mine is that I can use NC to transfer and when it's done it automatically launches Nikon View, where you can see thumbnails of adjustable size. Lately I've been skipping NC and going straight into the camera as an external drive, previewing the photos in Explorer, and transfering only the ones I want to keep.

What do you hook camera to computer with? The video cord?

USB on the Nikon.

We do this all the time in studio...

Use Nikon capture and a USB cable ... works great

I think you have to set your USB setting to PTP instead of Mass Storage.
