1) What's the next year that Christmas and New Year's Day are the same day of the week?

2) Imagine you're a calendar printer. For any given year, you store the layout of all of the days for that year in one file (e.g., if Jan. 1 is a Wed., you lay out the rest of the year and put it all in one file). How many layouts do you need?

3) The various year layouts follow each other in a repeating pattern. How many years long is that pattern? Note that some individual year layouts will repeat before the overall pattern repeats.

4) You're in a state that touches the Pacific Ocean. You call a friend in a state that touches the Atlantic Ocean. You ask what time it is, and are surprised to realize it's exactly the same time where you are! Where are you each, what's the date, and what time is it? This isn't a trick; we're talking about U.S. states, and there's nothing like a 12-hour time difference; you can assume a 24-hour clock, in fact.

Have fun!

1) Never. They're always a week apart.
2) 14
3) It's about 11, I think.
4) I just got home from buying new Woodies at Joyful Honda, so am too tired to attempt that one.

1) Either this coming Christmas if you're not being picky, or never, since New Years Day is actually next year, which is one day in the week before Christmas of the same calendar year.

Very good, Ben! Never is the correct answer to #1. :)

#2 is 14.

#3 is much longer than 11 years. Here's a hint: all 14 of the layouts do get used. So it's at least 14 years.

Pug-H, you buy woodies at a Honda dealer? The car place?

No. It's a shopping mall chain; we happen to have one of the biggest. The Art & Craft section is just about my favourite shop in the world. It has this...

Yours for ¥450,000.
