Hi I need your experienced advice.

I have a 600quids budget to get into the DSLR world, I know its not much but it will have to do for now. I thought I knew what I wanted but now after reading and searching for information I am more confused than ever.

So with the Canon 400D in mind and a 600GBP budget (maybe I could push it to 700) [b]How would you spend it??[\b]

Just so you know, I am based in the UK and I'm not into a particular type of photography and by reading some of the threads here I think a wide angle and a telephoto macro will do for the time being, my problem is how to get the most out of my budget and which stores are ok to save some quids on equipment?

Starting option:
Jessops:
Lens kit 532GBP + Tamron 70-300 99quid

Thanks for all the help

Definitly the 400D with kit lens.

Not sure about the 70-300 because I've never used it but I have to wonder about the quality. You might be better off waiting for a telephoto until you have more money.

Don't have any specific advice except that if you find anywhere cheaper than Jessops, then just take a copy of the advert or URL and they will generally match the price. I got them to knock nearly £200 off the advertised price of the 5D by quoting Warehouse express.

Everyone knocks the cheap hundred quid zoom lenses but my 70-300 is fine for me. Maybe soft compared to L and slow compared to L, but never having used L I'm not spoiled enough to care! :P

Yep, I have the Tamron 70-300 and I think it's great for the price - and so do many reviews I've read. Remember you can check photos taken with it by DPCers (3 of them are mine!)

In fact that's exactly what I got when I had the same budget (except it was the 350D then)

I`d choose the 400d as well.
A good website to compare prices here.
The Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro DG is good for around £179.
Also as konador says canon 70-300 is a bargain for £148 but the sigma has a usable macro. I have used and won ribbons with both.

The canon 70-300 is soft over 200mm. the sigma (must be the APO version) is very sharp and a decent lens, especially for the money.

remember you'll need/want a second battery and some CF cards. 2Gb ones are the best value overall - not too big but less $/mp than than the 1gb cards.

and a bag to carry it in. a dlsr takes up a lot more room than the Fuji you have now. The lowepro mini trekker classic is a nice bag at a nice price and will carry a lot of stuff so you won't outgrow it anytime soon.

Go with a nikon unless you have Canon glass or really WANT a Canon.. I think you would do just as good with a 30D the reviews dont rave about the 400D. you can get a D80 with the 18-55 kit on it for that price go have a look and hold them play with them before you buy.. The D80 is solid and the 18-55 is a great kit lens

The only argument against this would be that there are usually 3 or 4 times the number of secondhand lenses on ebay for the Canon than is the case for the Nikon.

I have bought almost ALL my lenses from ebay - its so much cheaper
