This is what I submitted for High Contrast II:

I thought it would score higher. Not enough contrast? Boring? Sepia? Added gaussian blur? Something else? It was one of those rare instances where it turned out exactly how I planned - maybe the plan wasn't so hot!

My own feeling is that the image doesn't start until the mid-ground. There isn't really any foreground at all, which is always a difficult thing to do well.

From your words in the photographers comments, I get a sense that you were drawn to the bright masts against the blue sky. In this photo, there are certainly the masts, but there are also lots! of white boats. This makes for a very busy composition; my eye doesn't know where to look. Falc's comment is also true: all the action is centered in the middle of the frame. Was it possible to get another vantage point where you could get a perspective of more masts against the sky? This way, you could concentrate our focus on those contrasty lines. Most times, simpler is better. Pick a subject, and isolate it. Include only those things in the frame that add to the composition. Just my 2 cents.

I think your 2 cents are on target. In real life the masts looked fantastic against the sky. I had some shots down by the water but couldn't get the angle I wanted. The shot I submitted was taken from the walkway on the breakwall so I was quite a bit higher. I thought the boats added more contrast, but if they pull your eyes from the masts that doesn't help much. Thanks for the insightful reply.
