Challenge: Originality
Description: Shoot a photo that will make others say, "now that's different!" You don't have to invent a new genre but you do have to make being original your primary goal.
Ok, I'm a little burned out with all the carbon copy photos that are getting more and more identical with each passing challenge hence this suggestion. I'm not knocking anyone here as I'm sure some people are trying to improve by mimicking others or retaking their own shots but if you're here to improve I think we should try and foster creativity and originality once in a while. So instead of just scalvert practicing it how about we all try it out for a challenge ourselves?

I'd like this one.
But. Sometimes it's hard to really grab that original idea, just within a week. And most of the time these ideas are hard ones (at least mine) to find time and shoot, so with a fulltime job that might be hard too.
Maybe a 2-weeks-challenge? ;-)
Or schedule it for the week of 16 october, then I have 1 week holiday :D

agreed. an "originality" challenge would be such a refreshing change. and quite the challenge as well to be truely original.
edit: I just realized how funny it is I tooka break from processing a "flower" shot to post to this. lol. too funny. back to my flower::hangs head in shame::
but it's a cool flower right??? huh??? : ROFL. j/k

Good point. Make it a month long endeavor and have it replace one of the monthly free studies.

So what makes originality? Is it the concept that is totally unique and orignial or the execution of a concept? If it's the concept that has to be original, then I would lay odds that anything anyone shoots for this has been done, in one form or another sometime, in the last 100+ years of photography. Now if it's the execution of the conept, that's a different story. People are finding new and unique ways of re-inventing the wheel all the time.
So which is this suppose to be?

Up to you as to what you think the voters would accept. For me a photo that conveys a strong sense of originality (whatever that may be) would get high marks in terms of meeting the challenge.

Really it could be anything as you say. It could be very unique lighting, post processing, subject matter that you don't normally see. Heck, if you can shoot a hummingbird shot sleeping that would get high marks from me. :P

excellent idea because i'm sure many lovely original ideas are chucked in the garbagoise every challenge in favor of the dross that will outscore them. so yes, make originality the theme. then there will at least be original stock photos ;-) (next can we do wacky, outlandish and just plain funky?) |

I thought this one was unique, but perhaps not original. It did have some interesting post processing, but score wise it was in the crapper. |
