I just got in the Canon 50mm f/1.8 mkII that I got used off ebay.
I haven't used it much but I have noticed it sounds like the focus motor is trying to move sometimes in manual focus mode and its not letting me shoot. This normally happens when I have the frame out of focus, is this normal? On my other lenses, they would fire no matter how out of focus the frame may be...

| That's definately odd. I have had similar issues when the switch was only mostly thrown, and not completely in the MF position. There definately could be an issue there, but you may also be able to set it to AF, then back to MF to see if you can get it to reset. |

| Turn camera of and mount the lense preset to MF. It shouldn't be able to autofocus when you turn the camera on. See what happens. |

did that, still sounds like it is trying to autofocus...
Edit: tried it again and it didn't autofocus that time..
It seems like it only does it sometimes...
Maybe I've got a bad swtich...

| Well, in answer to your first question. No, it's not normal for the lense to try and autofocus in manual focus mode. I'd be sending it back. |

I just got that lens the other day as well I havent really used it much but I think i found something unusual in manual focus, I will check later.
By the way  jfriesen if you havent already I think you should look here
