Well, I had great fun with this shoot because this kid really is the most amazing model ever. This was my first time working with a live model in a studio, so I basically just let him mess around in front of the camera and pointed and clicked a lot, filled the card in half an hour. It's amazing to look back at the entire set and see just how much he moved around, and how many different expressions and poses he had.

However, I'm not one to ever really complain about my scores, but this is one of my favorite entered shots, and I thought it would break 5.9 at the very least. Was his head touching the top of the frame really that much of a killer? Or was it just too dark?

I like the picture. The thing that pops into my head when I look at it first though is a feeling of claustrophobia. Seems a little to cramped. Just my impression.

I gave a 6. But I believe my comment on the photo points out two areas that I think dramatically hurt the score.

****

1) The lack of clearance above the head.

2) The distracting sock.

I am a pretty easy going judger. There are some who leap on any flaw (I think these people have something to prove other than to themselves). So it is likely that quite a few found the above two issues justification for scores of two and 3. And I am sure there were quite a few who found some reason to DNMC. Perhaps the shirt is more violet than purple.

I thought it was a nice shot but with room to improve.

you are in my statistically favorite photographers list, but I only gave this picture a 5. I thought the shirt covering his face seemed contrived, forced. But then again I rarely like studio/model shots.

I gave this photo a seven. I don't think this photo was hurt too much by slight off color from perfect purple as theSaj suggests. I think that the photo may have been marked down a point or two by some because of the tight crop and head cut off could have added a couple tenths atleast to your shot. I think the sock is distracting though, as it is the brightest part of your photo and not a detail that you want to be so prevalent. Maybe another tenth of a point, maybe more. The other comment you received was that it was two dark and quite a bit of his purple shirt is in shadow, so maybe try using a reflector to bounce the light across his shirt which would also brighten his face and allow the voter to connect more with his expression. For these color challenges I really think you have to have alot of the color prevalent in your photo to give the voter no excuse to mark you down. As a portrait it is excellent, however in a challenge where you are to have purple as a mainstay in the photo, maybe a tighter crop, getting rid of the empty gray space on the left would have shown more purple and a higher score. Again I thought it was great, and just my two cents.

If you look at the top ranked photos what do you see? Landscape, landscape, landscape, pretty face up close, landscape, pretty face up close, etc. Your photo has none of that. That's what's wrong!

Now I am only partly joking but seriously, looking at the results and the ones that involved a studio shot of a full body person just didn't do well. I can't tell you why that is. I do know there is NEVER a week that goes by where a landscape shot isn't on the front page or a close up shot of an attractive woman's face (add close ups to bugs also). Forget about scalvert's shots because his is the exception but most everyone else shoots these things and gets on the front page. Maybe you should have shot this outdoors with a sunset backdrop? Just a thought.

I gave it a very decent score... the sock didnt distract me - minor detail... and I liked the color and the lighting... The crop was a tad awkward... would have scored higher if cropped better.

Gave it a 7, which means I thought it rose above average by a fair amount. Didn't even notice the sock, just noticed the creative pose/ use of clothing.

i really like the photo, but I agree, I did find it a bit cramped at the top. The sock was less of an issue for me. I like the use of shadow and light, but I would have preferred just a LITTLE more light on the right side of the photo near the top.
