This is to announce Round 5 of the advanced editing contest (not officially a part of DPC), as originally administered and hosted by nshapiro. Thanks to those who have requested it be "revived".

strangeghost has volunteered to administer the fifth round. Here is an updated ruleset (mainly clarifications from the original rules). I've also written an "admin" set of instructions which I've sent him directly, that can be passed on from admin to admin.

Rules:

1) A full size picture will be emailed to those who sign up. An alternate means, e.g., Imageshack, may be used to help those with small email attachment limits.

1a) If the admin chooses to post the file, others who are not playing in the round may download the file to "play at home". For those playing at home, please do not post your interpretation on DPC until AFTER the round is over. Since this is mainly a learning experience, we ask that anyone "playing along at home" post their editing steps at the time (after the contest) when they post to the contest thread.

2) You are to edit the photo to make it "art gallery quality", per the DPC advanced editing rules. Cropping, rotating, and all the usual adjustments you make to your own images under DPC "Advanced Editing" rules are permitted.

2a) Keep track of your editing steps, as you will need to send these to the admin with your submission. This is both a validation and the "learning/teaching" component of the contest.[/B]

2b) The admin has full deciding power over whether you have violated the advanced editing rules. If your submission is in early, admin may notify you why your photo violates the AE rules and give you an opportunity to correct it. This is meant to be a learning process, but not meant to be a full time job for admins, so play by the rules.

3) There can be up to 12 participants.

4) You will have 2 days to edit the photo, at which time you are to email the "admin" (who is running the round) a reduced version, no more than 640 pixels in the longest dimension and no more than 150KB. Include your editing steps per #2 above, in the email.

5) The admin will post them all in a gallery that permits anonymous rating and non-anonymous comments. Any DPC user can register for the gallery so that they may vote. You don't have to be a contest participant to vote.

6) The vote goes on for 2 full days until 12 am EST.

7) The winner will be announced. The winner gets to supply the next photo and admin (run) the next round, and so on. You can run it from nshapiro's gallery, or your own.

8) No trash talk! Be nice and supportive of each other and keep this more focused on Education rather than Competition.

The point of the contest is to practice advanced editing, and share your technique and experience with others. The voting part is only to add a little excitement and to show how "accepted" the various edits are.

John will announce the participants shortly!

Edit: Grammar, cleanup, and clarifications

I'm here!

If you're interested in joining this round, PM me your email address, and I'll reply by sending you the photo I've chosen. It will be a camera-original from my 10D so everyone will be starting with a full size, full res photo. I'll also post the photo online for those who prefer to download it rather than receive it as an attachment. In that case, I'll send you a link instead of the file.

After I receive 12 PMs with emails, I'll post a note here closing the entry phase. After I send out the photo/link to everyone, I'll post again here notifying everyone that the 48 hour editing phase will start. I'm hoping the timing works out so that people can have the weekend to edit and submit.

One addition to Neil's rules. Cropping should be considered appropriate. When I participated last round, for some reason I was thinking that the rules stated (or implied) that we had to edit and submit the whole image. I was wrong about that, so I just wanted everyone to know that cropping is allowed and encouraged if you think it's necessary to improve the image to a presentable state.

I'll send PMs to those who have already expressed interest in joining. Others, send me PMs. First 12 are in.

As Neil mentioned earlier, can you make the original available publicly for those who wish to play along at home? Thanks!

Yes, the original will be posted so that anyone who wants to can download it and take their own shot. I won't post that link until we have 12 entrants and the official editing period is begun for participants.

I've gotten a few PMs with no email address. YOU MUST GIVE AN EMAIL ADDRESS TO JOIN. I replied to those who did it. You know who you are.

I don't want to do it for the contest but I would like to get a copy of the picture to just try on my own. Could you send the picture to me?

I went through the old thread and PM'd everybody who had expressed interest. I didn't follow that thread after my post and didn't realize that so many people had already thrown in their hats. I may extend the field to allow 15 entrants this time around to accommodate a few of those folks. Unfortunately, there are already 10. The next five get in.

Last bump of the night because I'm dog-tired and going to bed. We now have 13. First two on the list when I wake up get added. I'll probably get the editing part started Friday night, or maybe tomorrow and stretch the rules to allow everybody Friday-Sunday to edit.

the last one was some dried branches of a tree in a swamp environment.
I wonder if something just as tough would be chosen this time round?
I hope it'll be a picture worth oogling, heh
