Can I use one? I cant seem to find a clear answer in the rules. It is an effect I am applying to the whole image. Its not a filter, but it is a tool. Ahhhhh...I have no idea. thanks for any responses

I don't think so. I remember that I was going to use one (a gradient in overlay mode) to brighten up an area... The rules told me not to

Gradients are not allowed under basic editing. Even though it shows up in the tool menu it's treated as a filter, basically. There are many tools that are not legal in basic, actually; clone, healing brush, gradient, airbrush, pencil tool, marquee selection, lasso selection, magic wand, etc etc.

You can use a Gradient Map adjustment layer in Basic (if applied to the whole image in Normal mode). Otherwise, gradients aren't allowed.
