A friend of mine wants me to come to Richmond and take pictures of her uncle and aunt's 50th wedding anniversary. What kind of pictures should I do for this kind of event?

I think I'm supposed to ask about pricing, though I hate charging close friends.

Anniversary photographs are probably not that much different from wedding photographs for which there are many threads. Example thread 1 and Example thread 2.

Expect to do portraits under poor lighting conditions. Control the lighting and background as much as possible. A fast lens and an external flash/lights can help.

If you hate charging your friends, find a piece of gear you'd like to have and "need" for the shoot and let them buy it for you. For example, do you have an external flash? If not, get them to spring for a Canon 430EX or 580EX, depending on what the market will bear. Get the flash well in advance, and experiment with bouncing it off walls and ceilings until you are comfortable with it. It will make a world of difference. Very useful if it's an outdoor ceremony, too, as fill flash to soften harsh shadows and lighting.

How about a nice album to put the proofs in? Where would I order this from?

I have a flash. I think it's the 430 one. It was the next to the top of the line one, and I bought it because I could afford it. Now, I'm trying to get lenses. There's one that I'm really hoping will be here this weekend because I'm getting requests to do Homecoming pictures this weekend, a family portrait for Christmas card purposes, and I want to play with the new lens.

I got a big compliment because the parents of some of the kids I did their senior pictures with let their kids also sit with Evil Year Book Nazi Photographers just to be sure their kids photographs will be in the year book. They've been busy writing letters to the school saying that they found Evil Year Book Nazi Photographers to be rude, unpleasant to deal with, way overpriced, and the pictures weren't that good.

Mpix is one place.

If I need something fast I use a local Ritz Camera Store.

If you are uncomfortable charging your friends, they may be equally uncomfortable having you work without any compensation. One possibility is to have them give you a gift certificate to a local camera store so you can buy more photo goodies. Be sure to charge enough to cover your expenses.
