Hello, i'm doing more and more sports photography and in England we're reaching the time of year where it will probably rain all the time. I was wondering how people protect their cameras and lenses from the rain.
I've already had one lens stop auto focusing after shooting a football match when it was raining lightly, i did have a chammy leather (as reckomended by a pro) over the camera but it obviously didn't work well enough. |

I was thinking of that but i had once seen a soft plastic cover that wrapped around the lens and camera which had a hole in the end to screw onto the filter attachment, i can't seem to find any sites that stock these. |

An umbrella is probably best in all but light rain. It does necessitate a tripod though, in most cases.
If you have lens hoods for your lenses, then rather than buy an expensive covering, you can get a plastic bag (or sheet of plastic), cut a hole for the lens, and then secure it around the front of your lens hood with an elastic band. The camera then sits inside the bag / under the plastic.

Yes a home made device might be the best option.
