This article shows (complete with actual photos) of how a filter used for protection can negatively alter the image:

Filters for lens protection...good idea or not?

My questions are:

1) Since these were done with a skylight filter, can we expect the same from a UV filter?

2) These were all indoor shots. I would venture to say that one probably doesn't need a lens protection filter when shooting indoors (in a isolated environment). What about outdoor shots? Would they be that noticeable?

3)Your thoughts?

1) Skylight, UV are pretty much synonymous

2) Yes...

3) IMO, skylight (UV) filters are unnecesary in digital as the effects of UV light can be very easily fixed in PP with only curves and saturation adjustments.

Simple Skylight fix in post process. I used nlk Color FX Pro, but the same thing can be done with curves and saturation.

Left is unfiltered, right is filtered.

.

I know post-processing can work wonders, but Photoshop is not going to keep salt spray off my lens the next time I'm at the beach.

No it won't and THAT is a great time to use one... or perhaps when having someone grind metal while naked.
