Hello all and sundry
I will soon have a chance to attend an outside/night-time music festival. I am interested in taking candids of the masses. Photographs taken at night = squat. I am hoping that some of you more experienced shooters can lend a hand. I need some real-world advice; settings, conditions etc. Any advice would be skippy, thanks!
I will be using the following equipment:
Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT
Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di for Canon
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro for Canon
Canon Sppedlite 430 EX
I will generally be trying to photograph people who have no intention of being still. I will likely use the Tamron most of the time ΓΆ€“ as it is the faster lens. But I am sure to attach the Sigma eventually.

Set your camera/flash to second shutter sync and choose a shutter speed that will purposely blur the action while the flash freezes it. That could add some energy to the shots. :-)

Oops, did I say "second shutter"? The official term is "second curtain". In other words, the flash goes off just before the 2nd curtain crosses the film plane, shutting off the exposure. So that the motion blur leads up to the freeze frame, rather than trailing off after the freeze frame (which tends to look weird).
What shutter speed you pick really depends on what you're trying to do. Switch to full manual. Set the aperture to what you want for depth of field. Set your shutter speed to what you want for motion blur. And let the flash figure out the proper exposure of the subject.

Thanks David - I understand you now. I never toyed with the second curtain mode on my flash before - but will certainly try ASAP. From what I have been reading online though, I doubt I will use the flash much.
