I have been asked to take some photos at a nightlub/disco - mostly dark but with fancy lights, strobes etc. I have a Fuji S9000, a flash with diffuser and some battery powered slave flashes.

Anyone got any advice on how to go about getting good shots in these conditions or the address of any sites with examples to emulate ?

Thanks

Gonna be tricky for sure... I take it that the club will be occupied during the shoot.

I'd shoot both with and without flash, bounced and diffused, fast shutter and dragging the shutter with flash.

You want to keep some of the ambience of the club lighting, so direct flash isn't going to be your best option. Most likely, your best photos will come from bouncing the flash while dragging the shutter or just by working as much with natural lighting as possible.

I think Bear_Music would be a good person to talk to about it.

I am no expert, and haven't ever shot in a nightclub. That said, I did a concert once, and expect that the lighting would be similar. I shot with my 50mm at F/1.8, ISO 400, and a decent shutter speed (don't remember exactly what) Used full Manual, and while the camera thought it was underexposing, it came out okay.

Here's an example of what the lighting can look like:

Spot lights can be really cool, especially colored ones!

You should of course try some with the flash, but I would use to to highlight people at the club, and try to let the natural lighting dominate as much as possible. Shots that are wholly flash-lit would not capture the atmosphere as well, IMO.
