It would be so awesome if we could have next and previous image buttons when browsing pictures.

So the previous button would link to the previous image in the portfolio folder. Same with the next button. If you are at the first or last image in a folder, it will either just not show the respective link, or make it so that it is not a link.

Not sure if this has been brought up previously, but would be DARNED SWEET if we could have it. It would make browsing through a Folder SO much easier.

Gret idea - I think it has been suggested in the forums before. Perhaps you could suggest it to Langdon via Admin Ticket

The problem with Next and Previous buttons is that they would be ambiguous in their meaning.

Will it take you to the next photo in the...

- Portfolio (as a whole)?
- Portfolio collection?
- Gallery?
- Most Viewed Images?
- Forum post?
- Challenge Results?

...anyway, you get the idea. Next and previous would have different meanings to different viewers, depending on the way they browsed in to the photo.

Well there does need to be abetter way to view someones portfolio than going back and forth and the thumbnails closing each time you browse back. I think that is my biggest dislike on DPC. Browsing portfolios becomes so much a chore that I think many wonderful images go unnoticed.

maybe if voting could go back to last slide to review or change vote OR skip the current photo being viewed without voting because ya want to come back to it later. It would be nice to skip a photo or if ya hit a vote number by mistake to easily go back and make a change.

I'm thinking it should be within the portfolio folder.

Let's say I have this Portfolio Tree:

Main Portfolio

Picture1.jpg
Picture2.jpg
Picture3.jpg

[GTG]
- GTG1.jpg
- GTG2.jpg
- GTG3.jpg
- [Candids at GTG]
- - Candid1.jpg
- - Candid2.jpg
- - Candid3.jpg

[Me]
- Me1.jpg
- Me2.jpg
- Me3.jpg

So the GTG, Candid, and Me photos are in their respective folders, and the Picture photos are just in the main portfolio folder.

When you are on GTG1, next would take you to GTG2, and next on GTG2 would take you to GTG3. There would be no next on GTG3 because it is the last photo in the GTG folder. There would be no previous on GTG1 because it is the first in the folder. It would not go on to Candid's folder because those photo's are in a different folder.

With the Picture1, Picture2, and Picture3, in the main portfolio, it would only show the photos in the sequence of Picture1, Picture2, and Picture3. Again, only showing the photos within that exact folder.

I think this is the biggest need for the next/previous buttons. We do not need anything as complex as to browse in sequence through the profile pictures posted in a thread, but just something simple to allow us to browse through someone's GTG Gallery (for example) and not have to go back to the thumbnails EVERY time we switch to a new picture.

When browsing someones portfolio, if you hold down the shift key when clicking on a thumbnail it will open in a new window. When you have finished looking at the picture, close the window. This way the thumbnails will not close.

Or try Firefox as a browser, it is excellent for DPC.

Middle mouse button opens the link/thumbnail in a new tab (same overall window). I can open a portfolio and in seconds select the 10 images I want to see in full. One click of the mouse then closes the tab.

Free, and really excellent browser, it has changed my entire way I use the web.

I use Firefox, and yes I realize your can open the images in another tab. I still think it would be nice to be able to open an image in a portfolio folder, and just hit next to go on to the next image rather than have to open each in a new tab

That's what the << and >> buttons on the voting screen do.

This has been suggested MANY times beforem including by me. :)

Here's your chance to try out the nifty forums search feature. Just go to the Web Site Suggestions forum and enter:
next previous
in the search box. There's a huge raft of threads where this has been suggested.

The concern about ambiguity is valid, but Crayon made up a nice image to show how it could be done. The same concept could be put next to the challenge title, the collection, the gallery, and every other possible place.

I also get a little tired of people providing Firefox workarounds. Yes, Firefox rocks. I use it exclusively. But I'd rather click little arrows, and guess what? Most people (and I mean, the vast majority) still use Internet Explorer.

The fact that Firefox helps overcome an annoyance isn't a good reason not to have an incredibly useful feature that people have asked for in repeated threads.

Now, maybe there are other good reasons, like programming difficulty, Langdon having other projects on his plate, etc. But not "Firefox lets you do x."
