Just want to know - What happens to drunk drivers in your country? In South Africa - They get pretty big penalties if they are caught.
My 2months pregnant wife was driving my brand new Renault Megane. Luckily my wife and baby is fine, but my car is a mess.
This idiot then took the gap and drove off. Luckily I had witnesses that provided me with a colour, model and registration number.
To top it all - Police tells me they the registration number registered to a diferent car on their system. PERFECT. Luckily I then applied some sense and phoned the service centre, asking them to check if they serviced a car like that;
Big break - they did, I got the details of the driver and phoned them. Guy that answered told me that it was his Dad - not the first time. Dad would get drunk, and then drive. 3rd incident. Hopefully the police will catch him.

Well where I'm from, once you have a DUI, you are pretty much screwed. You can't do a lot of things, for example, you can't get a permit to carry a concealed weapon. You can't get a driving job at just about anywhere.

I think you may also lose your license depending on the circumstances for a certain period of time. I've known some people who have gotten through it with no suspension, but I think it's normal to lose your license for a good while, maybe at least a year I'm thinking.

I know one guy that got it suspended for DUI, then drove again and got another DUI...I'm pretty sure he won't have a license for quite a while...and he may have spent some time in jail.

Oh yeah, to add to your story, I got wrecked into head on 40 mph each about 7 years ago by a drunk driver. She was in critical condition when rushed to the hospital and lost a lot of blood. When they did do a blood alcohol test, she was at .09 -- that was about an hour or two after the accident, so they said she was pretty damn drunk when she crossed three lanes to hit me head on. I had no escape with a guard rail on my right and more traffic directly on my left. That HURT.

I'm very relieved to hear everyone is OK.

I was hit by a drunk driver head-on 11 years ago when the driver coming the other direction crossed the dividing line. I luckily walked away with a fractured ankle but my car was totaled.

I think the United States is way, way too lenient on drunk drivers.

Recently I played in the South African National Championships fir Indoor Cricket. One player from another province was caught on the Saturday night before the tournament - Had to sit the weekend in Jail, Court case the Monday - He got a hefty fine and 60 hours of week-end Jail time. Imagine that - Working during the week, Friday afternoon after work you have to go to Jail, sit there the weekend, get out on Monday morning to go back to work.

i think our penalties differ within the states, but in most states they are not strict enough. its pretty pathetic that i can go out "knowingly" get drunk, drive my car and kill someone and maybe go to jail for 18 months. I might even just get probation if it was my first offense. I had to do a paper on vehicular manslaughter when i was in college and the articles about the penalties i read were pretty disturbing.

Glad to hear your wife is ok.

I believe that here in Michigan, they will seize the vehicle and sell it. I'm pretty sure that's not on the first offense though.

I think the penalties are nowhere near stiff enough. I'd like to see mandatory jail time for all DUI offenders.

I'll admit to being biased, my best friend was killed by a drunk driver in 1988.

I agree with that...See, the thing is, there can be someone that gets a DUI and kills someone, and they get maybe a year...there could be another guy that outright murders someone and gets 7 years...but I know if I did something like say steal a car, it'd be my luck that I'd get like 10 years or something.

I dont even drink anymore when I go out with my friends. I mean go to any bar in Pittsburgh and it'll be filled with drunk people...and the parking lots are filled with these drunk people's cars.

Not to mention, if you drink just one beer, leave the bar, and an accident happens that is NOT your fault anyway, you'll still be in some deep trouble with your insurance company. I don't drink and drive ever. If I have a beer, it's at my house or I'll go have one beer at a restaurant and then drink water or soda after that.
