I was actually hoping for a 6 on this shot. What could have been done better on it.
Also, do you think it hurt that this photo was entered as well and is very similar. In fact, I was with him when he shot it. I have basically the same shot as he does off of my camera.

Maybe a little more sky on the right and top?? I would have given you at least a 6 for clarity and color.
Also, bottom photo has better composition with the angle of the lines...

I also want it known that I'm not complaining about his photo or mine. This is a PB by a huge amount, I just want to get better.

Whoah 5.7, cryingdragon has found his zen. I can see where you were going with the crop idea, but the angle of the other photo is more visually appealing. Also, I personally prefer the more blue/less cyan look of the 2nd photos sky but that can go either way on this site.

That's the natural sky color in both shots. Mine was taken later in the day after the cloud cover broke and the sun started shining through. And thanks!

I think it was because you were lazy and sat on the bleachers. And I drank more beer than you!!!! :-)
Mike, part may have been the color of your sky, it looks just a tad washed out/greenish to me at the bottom. I think the difference in crop and angles is just personal preference and I like both shots. I like your stark contrast of just the two colors, in fact I had one of the black/yellow parachutes in my outtakes. I'll post my outtake later in the day.
And congratulations on the new PB. |

Congrats to your PB, 5.7778 ain't that bad - you definitely need a better camera. The difference IMO is, along with the better composition as already mentioned, the lines in the other picture are better visible due to higher contrast. You could have darkened the sky a bit and turned the hue a tad to the red side.

I agree with this feedback.
Diagonal lines in the other are more dynamic. A circular polarizer could have given you a richer/deeper blue sky which would have made the yellow jump out even more. Regarding the sun/sky/overcast comment - you will get more saturated, vivid colors with a slightly overcast sky. But then you lose the cool sky blue. ;^)
Overall, nice shot. |

The clouds in the background distract from the subject more. |

As it is, it's a beautiful shot with amazing color and clarity, and with (in my opinion) better use of shutter speed than the other shot (shh, I didn't say that). Being that both were in the "Leading Lines" challenge and comparing to the other shot though, the other shot uses that definition just a little bit better with the strings coming from the exact corner leading to the upper-right third intersection of the photo.
In yours, the lines start from just under Left-center but nowhere in particular, and thus the use of leading lines is not as powerful. Perhaps if you could rotate it and crop so that the lines are coming exact left center for a more centered composition. But as with all challenges, you could have the exact same crop, composition, etc as kawesttex's and still score lower for some reason (or vice versa), so don't take it too hard. Congrats on the PB with a really nice shot, keep up the good work. |
