Just messing around in GIMP. I looked over and saw my violin (can't play it, probably never will) Set it against my white posterboard and took some shots... This is obviously way over processed. What do you guys think?

I think you got carried away :-) It's actually kind of pretty though, it really is. Be nice if the crop upper left were as little looser (see all of the truncated key) and it would be nice to clone out the two vague blobs on the margin upper left. Be nice to have a little more detail in shadows lower right, a hint of warmth in the wood and a bit of separation from BG shadow there. Not much, just a hint.

There. that's what I think. I went through a phase where I did a LOT of shots using selections and gaussian blur on the BG, producing similar halos. I still like the effect.

I don't know, looks pretty good to me. I sorta wish the front part of the violin were not so much in the dark and cut off, and that one of the little twister things (what are they called?) were not cut off just a tad, but I do like how it looks like it's floating, and I like the sharpness and the rich colour of the wood. And the background with the almost black to grey gradient looks pretty cool too.

I agree. I do like the effect for this subject :)
I find myself straining to see a bit more detail by the chin rest, as I can see that there IS something darker there, but not just what. When I scroll to crop right above that, my eye is happy.
But since you asked about processing...
Yup, it's obviously heavily processed, but in this case it works for me.

Thanks for the replies. This is more or less just an experiment. I was using a reading lamp that was on my desk as the only light source, custom white balance of course, because DANGIT, now that I have been researching white balance, I am all of the sudden noticing how dang yellow all the lights around my house are. But yea, I had to reposition the light a couple times to keep from the harsh "blowouts" that were sure to come from putting the light right over it. I should have rigged a diffuser (tissue paper, lol) over the light. That's why there isn't a lot of detail around the bottom.
